The Hip Hop Education Guidebook disrupts the notion that hip hop is "just music". Rather, it's a powerful movement that is historically, contextually, and critically rich in its contributions, and Dr. Runell Hall really hits home with the ways in which we can use rhyme, beats, history, culturally relevant material, and creative methods for teaching and learning.

This book includes a fantastic set of lesson plans and resources in a variety of subject areas, collated from original contributions from teachers, artists and experts. The fact that it is rooted in real world experiences makes it a meaningful and practical aid for any teacher hoping to incorporate hip-hop into their practice.

The range of professionals who contribute lesson plans and the way the authors organize and comment on the various topics gives a real impression of the depth and complexity of the field and how powerful hip-hop can be across educational contexts, levels and objectives. From English language arts to humanities to mathematics, the book includes relevant material for all subject teachers. I appreciate the way the authors have retained the original formatting provided by individual teachers as this gives an indication of the diversity of approaches which are being adopted within hip-hop education and reflects the fact that hip-hop is anything but standard.

I have adapted and used several of the lessons and activities in my own teaching and witnessed the amazing impact that hip-hop can have on student engagement and learning. The depth of material included means I find myself continually returning to the guidebook, and gaining new ideas years after I first used it. I believe that any teacher can benefit from introducing hip-hop into the classroom, and I would definitely recommend this book as a great starting point for anybody who wishes to do so.

I have purchased multiple copies of this book and given them to aspiring teachers (of all grade levels) as well as used the book in my own practice as a student development/multicultural affairs professional in higher education. It's also written in a very "lesson plan friendly" way. I admit that I have found myself grabbing the book and selecting a lesson on my way to a workshop with students! It's that good.....

Dr. Runell Hall is also well known in the social justice community of scholars and practitioners, so I knew I could trust that the work in the book would be inclusive and positive.

This book provides a spectrum of lesson plans and curriculum ideas that integrate Hip-Hop inspired pedagogy and core social justice issues. It's a great resource for those educators, community workers, activists/artivists, or even mentors that are looking for exciting ways to engage and invigorate students and young people. The lessons can be adapted or modified to work within various curriculums and subjects. I have and will continue to recommend this book to people looking for ways to effectively teach material, engage students, facilitate relationships and strong community in the classroom and to promote social consciousness.

The Hip-Hop Education Guidebook is an incredible work that provides educators with a vital perspective on how to enrich the educational environment. Educators across the country struggle on how to "reach" and engage today's youth. This guidebook contributes to the solution by offering lessons plans that have been executed by actual educators from across the country. I've seen first hand how teachers positively react to the lesson plans and get excited about a new dimension to get the best from their students. This guidebook is another essential tool for all educators. A must read.

We started using the guidebook prior to state testing to help keep the children on track but also provide some stress relief. They LOVED it. They loved the approach to incorporating "their lives" with academics. We now utilize the book in all aspects of our academic classes whenever we can.
