I purchased this book used without the software, so I do not know if having the software would have improved my experience. I bought this book because I was charged with the task of writing a B2B marketing plan. I do not have any formal marketing education or training, but I am usually pretty auto-didactic so I thought this book would help. The book does do a good job at breaking down basic marketing concepts, and it does discuss both B2B and B2C marketing (though it is a little heavier on B2C marketing).

While the book is a good introduction to marketing planning, I feel that it does not go deep enough into showing you how to actually gather the information you need and write a realistic marketing plan. I was left with A LOT of questions. For example, the section on how to perform a competitive analysis is less than a page long. It introduces the purpose of a competitive analysis and explains why it is important, then gives a theoretical description of what information a marketer may look for while analyzing the competition. It does not, however, give you a clear step-by-step guide of HOW to actually go about getting the information and organizing it, and it doesn't tell you what should be in the actual written plan. This is the case for the majority of the sections in the book.

The most disappointing part of "The Marketing Plan Handbook" is the fact that there is only one brief B2C marketing plan example in the book. The plan is so short and simple; there is no way a real business's marketing plan would be that easy to put together. Also, at the end of many of the sections of this marketing plan, there is a note in italics saying something like "an actual plan would have this, this and this. This sample plan does not have those elements." How is it a good sample if it is missing important elements??

If you don't have a strong marketing background but are interested in learning general information about marketing and how to write a marketing plan, this book is for you. If you have no marketing background or only some experience in marketing and you have to actually write a real life plan that your livelihood is depending on, find another book or hire a consultant.

This textbook was very well written and easy to use. I will use it in the future as a quick, easy to use, reference guide book for future marketing plans that I write.

I was working on a marketing plan and just needed a bit of clarity on a few topics and I happened to come across the Marketing Plan handbook by Marian Burk Wood. What a great book. It discussed the key elements of the plan and supported each with great examples of everyday companies. This book could be used by a novice marketers or a seasoned vets. it has a great format to build a solid plan.
