This collection of essays focuses on the commercial relations, marketing structures and development of consumption which accompanied early industrial expansion. It looks at the international matrix of early industrialization, dwelling on the themes of trade, state policy and mercantile and urban networks. The papers in the collection also examine aspects of industrial structure and work organization including women's work. They highlight the conflict and compromise between work traditions and the emergence of a market culture. While a good deal of recent research in economic and social history has been concerned with industrial structure and work organization, there has been little effort to connect this to changes in market structures and the emergence of a consumer culture in Europe at the time. Yet current sociological discussion of specialized and mass markets and historical research on the "material culture" during the period has pushed the question of the market to the fore.
