Sigmund Freud (6 May 1856 – 23 September 1939) was an Austrian neurologist and psychologist and the founder of the psychoanalytic school of psychology.

Psychopathology of Everyday Life (German: Zur Psychopathologie des Alltagslebens) is a 1901 work by Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis. The Psychopathology was originally published in the Monograph for Psychiatry and Neurology in 1901, before appearing in book form in 1904.

Presents a selection of the important writings of the nineteenth-century psychiatrist, including "Psychopathology of Everyday Life," "The Interpretation of Dreams," and "Totem and Taboo. Other works by Freud include The Psychopathology of Everyday Life and Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality. Freud's psychoanalytic theory was rather controversial, and several scholars did not agree with his preoccupation on the topic of sexuality. It was only in 1908 when this theory by Freud was recognized by critics, specifically during the first International Psychoanalytic Congress in Salzburg. However, Freud developed his own scientific studies that were different from the theories of his colleagues. In fact, much of his concepts were rooted from his past such as in his work entitled The Interpretation of Dreams.

Every contribution to the sum total of out knowledge has been consciously or unconsciously motivated by the wish to ameliorate the lot of mankind. Discoveries of this sort never come out of the clear sky; there is always a vis a tergo, which forms some definite nucleus in the mind of some genius, and this slowly grows until it attains sufficient proportions to make itself felt despite all obstacles.

Sometimes called the Mistake Book, the work became one of the scientific classics of the 20th century. Through its stress on what Freud called switch words and verbal bridges, it is considered important for psychopathology. Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious is a book on the psychoanalysis of jokes and humor.

He described himself as an obsessional neurotic. The landmark study was his 1900 book The Interpretation of Dreams. Freud first put forward a theory about this inner conflict in his essay Formulations on the Two Principles of Mental Functioning, written in 1911. For although the father of modern psychology told us so much about our inner lives, he was touchingly vulnerable himself. Many others followed, most importantly The Psychopathology of Everyday Life (1901), The Cases of ‘Little Hans’ and the Rat Man’ (1909), Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920) and Civilisation and Its Discontents (1930).

This classic edition of The Basic Writings of Sigmund Freud includes complete texts of six works that have profoundly influenced our understanding of human behavior, presented here in the translation by Dr. A. A. Brill, who for almost forty years was the standard-bearer of Freudian theories in America.Psychopathology of Everyday Life is perhaps the most accessible of Freud’s books. An intriguing introduction to psychoanalysis, it shows how subconscious motives underlie even the most ordinary mistakes we make in talking, writing, and remembering. • The Interpretation of Dreams records Freud’s revolutionary inquiry into the meaning of dreams and the power of the unconscious. • Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex is the seminal work in which Freud traces the development of sexual instinct in humans from infancy to maturity.• Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious expands on the theories Freud set forth in The Interpretation of Dreams. It demonstrates how all forms of humor attest to the fundamental orderliness of the human mind.• Totem and Taboo extends Freud’s analysis of the individual psyche to society and culture.• The History of Psychoanalytic Movement makes clear the ultimate incompatibility of Freud’s ideas with those of his onetime followers Adler and Jung.

Pretty new to psychology, and I was afraid Freud would be very literary and technical, but I was pleasantly surprised. He is a very good, fluid writer and keeps it in-depth, but simple enough to grasp. The "Dreams" section is by far my favorite.

The book itself was interesting and everything I hoped. My only issue, while yes it was a new book, the cover was torn. Not the look I want in my library but the book content is still interesting.

Purchased to read along with my college grandson who has it also for his honors class. Interesting and insightful.

Brilliant book ..
The Brill translation of the basic early writings of Sigmund Freud, although arguably not the most accurate translation, provides a good introduction to Freud's early work. We can read the critics and followers, yet sometimes we just have to go back to Freud's actual work. I keep my copy handy for reference and review.
