In the midst of a national nursing shortage, many nurses who can and want to work are being denied the opportunity. They are being pushed out of jobs and turned away from unfilled positions, all because they have disabilities.Eleven nurses who defied disability tell their personal stories of courage and determination in the face of stigma and discrimination, proving that nurses with disabilities have the ability to successfully fill the jobs that so desperately need filling.A car accident. A fall. A stroke. Depression. Disability can happen to anyone and at any time. By knowing the ins and outs of disability laws as they relate to those in the nursing profession and taking the measures outlined in this book, you can ensure that you will be prepared should disability ever happen to you. This book serves as both an inspiration and as a practical guide for nurses living and working with disabilities and for students with disabilities pursuing careers in nursing. Nursing with a disability is a challenge, but with proper planning, the right knowledge and perseverance, it is not impossible. The nurses who share their stories here are living proof of that. For hospital administrators, human resource personnel and nursing educators, this book demonstrates that shutting nurses and nursing students with disabilities out of the profession only does the profession and the patients who need them a disservice.Let's try not to leave any nurse who can work and wants to work behind. The cost to society of underutilizing the hearts and minds of these professionals is staggering.

I am a disabled RN who is trying to figure out her options for possibly going back to work in some capacity. If you look at the statistics, the majority of people on SSDI never return to the workplace in their lifetime. This book has helped inform me about different aspects of working while disabled through the stories that it tells. I enjoyed the variety in the stories and found them incredibly inspirational. Thank you to the author for putting out a book like this for those of us who need it!

This book has inspirational experiences that nurses have experienced in their unique lives, and a plethora of encouragement for anyone, not necessarily nurses. I am also disabled from an injury while on duty working with a patient transfer; consequently and foremost it is my aspiration to research on this increasing population of nurses in our society today. The populations of the clients served, have higher acuities and higher body mass indexes (BMI). This places nurses at an elevated degree of injury over a period of time. It is an honor that I am presently working with Donna Maheady as my mentor with my project.
I discovered Donna Maheady, ARNP, EdD, through her website Exceptionalnurse.com while working on my Capstone Project during the completion of my Bachelor of Science Degree (BSN) from California Baptist University in California. The website listed this book, "Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses Working with disAbilities" as one of many to read.
I have shared her book with faculty and my cohorts telling them that it is a book that they should read to bring new insight to their nursing careers. It is a very fast and easy read leaving you wanting more. The personal stories depicted, I can relate with, and admire the tenacity that each one has had to have, to endure a culture of administrators and nurse managers looking at the disability and not the knowledge to tap into. This book would be instrumental in the curriculum of the nursing programs in education. Thank you Donna Maheady for putting these eleven real-life experiences together in this book.

This is really a wonderful book, and not just for nurses. Each chapter is a vignette from a real nurse with real life health problems; like a mini-biography and a resolution as to how the nurse deals with the illness or disability and continues to work in nursing. Most people can relate to having a chronic health problem and holding a job. The stories are inspiring, funny, and remind us all how important a positive attitude is to a successful and happy life. Nurses especially should read this book about their colleagues; whether a nurse is healthy or not, his/her coworker may be dealing with issues that affect the workplace. More than an academic book, this is a real-life story book about some very inspiring people who, in spite of their own problems, choose as a profession to help others in need. I found the stories really touching and interesting.

Have not finished reading but have found some useful information.

I wish I would have had this book in 1980 when I was disabled after a car accident caused by a drunk driver. The book had useful information and inspiring tales of disabled nurses who broke through the odds against them. In my 19 years working part-time with clients with developmental disabilities, I would have appreciated reading about the heart warming thoughts of nurses worse off than I was. While this book was inspiring it also gives you some powerful tools. Thank you for giving these stories a much needed platform.

this is not the book I got, I got one with a different cover, different edition.
I'm a proud mother of one of the nurses in the book and she described her struggles with such maturity and strength. It is an excellent book for all mother's of children with disabilities. I had no such encouragement as the mother of a newborn........but as you read, nothing is impossible when you believe in yourself as my daughter always has.
