The book is more than simply a compendium of asymmetries across different species. Rogers, Vallortigara and Andrew cover evolutionary, development and genetic aspects of asymmetry, asking why and how asymmetries evolved in a world that is indifferent to left and right. This is the most in-depth analysis to date, by the three foremost authorities on animal asymmetries, of a phenomenon that has fascinated scientists and philosophers through the centuries. Professor Michael C. Corballis, University of Auckland.

Asymmetry of the brain and behavior (lateralization) has traditionally been considered unique to humans. However, research has shown that this phenomenon is widespread throughout the vertebrate kingdom and found even in some invertebrate species. A similar basic plan of organization exists across vertebrates. Summarizing the evidence and highlighting research from the last twenty years, the authors discuss lateralization from four perspectives - function, evolution, development and causation - covering a wide range of animals, including humans. The evolution of lateralization is traced from our earliest ancestors, through fish and reptiles to birds and mammals. The benefits of having a divided brain are discussed, as well as the influence of experience on its development. A final chapter discusses outstanding problems and areas for further investigation. Experts in this field, the authors present the latest scientific knowledge clearly and engagingly, making this a valuable tool for anyone interested in the biology and behavior of brain asymmetries.

Just so you all know if you submit to the journal Laterality, and both of the reviewers of your submitted paper suggest this book as a reference, that one of the lead authors is an Editor at Laterality. If this happens to you, please be aware there may be other motives in the "peer review" particularly if the Editor makes no conflict of interest known. Generally the structure of each paragraph is a reference to a salient finding from a journal article on lateralized brain functions, and as a bibliographic reference it is exhaustive and well documented but in general runs into an inability to paint a bigger picture of how and why lateralized functions develop or a critical appraisal of whether or not the literature quoted is in fact important or interesting or duplicated. The whole 170 pages ends with a 2 paragraph conclusion that misses the mark of potential popularization of science on one of the more interesting aspects of cognition and brain maturation and development, why do we have lateralized brain functions. Caveat Emptor- great for a bibliography, almost impossible to read cover to cover.

An excellent review of the literature on differences between the left and right sides on the brains of non-human species.

This is a fantastic book for an introduction to lateralisation as well as an excellent synthesis of the topic for those readers who have been in the field for many years. It is beautifully written in a way that is both informative and enjoyable. I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone interested in animal behaviour and lateralisation.

A MUST READ for anyone interested in left-right brain functionality. Fascinating and enjoyable reading, with reference to everything from orang-utans to dogs to bees! 10/10
