Worst First Aid Mistake Believing Step 1 is a Test of Fact-Accumulation. When I was deciding how to study for Step 1, I heard lots of conflicting advice.

Worst First Aid Mistake Believing Step 1 is a Test of Fact-Accumulation. On one side, I heard all the people who told me to read and re-read First Aid. They told me to memorize every single detail in it. Their focus was more on rote learning over real understanding of the material.

After going through the entire book, I can say three things about it: pictures, organization, and clarification. That said, the "content" area is not much any different than the 2014 edition. There are, however, few new drugs and pathologies added in subsequent organ systems (reason I bought it). This edition is all about new, colorful pictures and images in the neurology section on the eye are just too good. There is also particular material that was taken off in 2014 and now added in 2015 (i.e. Lac operon in biochemistry). I feel like the overall clarity, and the way this book is organized in terms of relating one page to another is done quite nicely in this edition.

So should you buy the 2015 FA if you already have 2014?

Well, that depends on when you are planning to take your test. If you are planning on taking it within a month, have a lot of notes in the 2014 edition, or just don't feel like spending another 50 bucks or so then you should stick with 2014. If your exam is a couple of months away as in the summer of 2015, then I think you should get this edition and start making notes in it. So bottom line is that if you have 2014 and if you want to get the 2015 edition for new content solely then don't, stick with 2014 because the content overall is the same. I gave this took a 5 star because it has everything 2014 had (all errors fixed) and the additional few drugs/path info that are passed from past test takers (which is what we want right!!).

One con about the new 2015, at least for me right now is that the pages are very cheaply done again (why don't they get the pages like Goljan path??). I made few lines using a Pilot G-2 pen, and I could see the lines on the other side so you might not want to use a heavily inked pen. Also, the book I have, some of the texts in the tables are a bit blurry or out of focus (this may be just in my book) so watch out for that.

Love this as a supplement to my normal step studying. It’s easy to read. I’m someone who learns best from cases, since they feel more like a memorable story than the smattering of facts that you get in First Aid. This book is only meant to be a supplement to first aid (or DIT or whatever you’re using), but it helps me build up that gut feeling for when I’m reading a question and I need to quickly discern what disease they’re talking about before moving on to the actual question and answer choices.

PRO: You cannot study for step 1 without this book. Is it complete? No. Does it touch on every single tested topic? (Yes). Does it pair well with UWorld ? I think so.

Also, I will say that any question that came up in my first couple practice tests where I was like "this isn't in FA!!!!!" ... it always was. Sometimes just a few tiny words tucked away but its always in here.

Again, there are a lot of topics in here that you cannot "learn" from, however it has all the key associations that you MUST know to do well.

I used just FA and UWORLD and did very well. There is no substitute though for studying hard during your first two years.

CON: The index in the back is all messed up. The page numbers it directs you to are not really correct. I remember I annotated the index for a few disease that were in the book if you ctrl + F the PDF version but are not indexed. Also, I think the spacing in the GI and endo sections is weird. I feel like there is so much packed onto each page in the GI section with hardly enough room to annotate anything and then entire half pages wide open in the endocrine section. Very minor points, especially after a week or two with this book during ISP when you have memorized the page numbers were topics are.

GOLD Standard for Step 1. Anyone taking it will confidently tell you that. People are not exaggerating when they say you really have to know EVERYTHING that is written in the book. Practically every line; you will realize that once you start doing practice questions and tests.

Disclaimer: although extremely high-yield, my gripe with this product is that it's more of a summary that teaching; keep that in mind; and with that in mind, note that you might have to supplement with another comprehensive book, or a subject-specific book if you are particularly weak in a subject. (BEST ADVICE: annotate uWorld and any other resource you use into here for things you don't know, or need more of an explanation on to understand the CONCEPT: make this your one go-to resource [rather than going back-and-forth between multiple resources].

Buy it, and know everything in it; you will be grateful when you take the actual test! :)
