Dagdatus

This book is sadly out of print, but if you can find it, you must get it for your child. It was the book I had as a youngster, and happily, I found it for my six year old daughter to explain the mysteries of conception, childbirth, the difference between baby boys, baby girls, boys, girls, men and women.

The book is illustrated in a beautiful painterly style. I remember looking at the images for a long time as a young girl. They are graphic, but not crude. They are not comical, or cartoonish, as in some "birds and bees" books. There is a picture of a nude man, and then a picture of a nude woman. There is a picture of a pregnant woman, "cut away" so you can see the baby inside. There is also a picture of a woman giving birth, but not in a scary way, but in a loving way. Also, a woman nursing a baby.

Discussions of intercourse are limited to things like, the man getting close to the woman and putting his (male organ) inside her v--. There is not a graphic explanation of sex. Girls bodies are explained as "not working as women's bodies work".

This is a good beginning book for children ages 5-8. Gives all the basic information and leaves plenty of room for further parental discussion.

A very of matter-of-fact book, gently and tastefully presenting the facts of life to children. The drawings are attractively done, and the text explains things clearly and in an interesting fashion. There is about one paragraph of text per page, so it's appropriate for even the younger kids, as soon as their attention span is ready for actual story books.
We started reading the book to each of our children when they were about 3-4 years old, and they loved it. Kids that age are very eager to know how things work, especially their own bodies. We found it much better than waiting until the children were older and might have thought the whole topic gross.
Unfortunately, the book has been out of print for some time, so I was delighted to find copies available to give to a friend. They are described as used, but the copy I got seemed to be unused, just a bit old looking, like it had been sitting around untouched since it was printed.

If you're a parent who is unsure about how to tell your child the facts about where babies come from, you will find this lovely classic very helpful, and hopefully if you've been feeling embarrassed about talking to a child about the subject, this will put you at ease. It's a tad costly now unfortunately. Too bad it went out of print. It shouldn't have.

My mother read this book to my sister and me in the early 70s, a few years after it was first published. I loved it back then, and still love it. A lot of quite exquisite emotion comes across in the illustrations. Quite wondrous really. It's clearly and simply written, very easy to read out loud to a child (or to an adult who needs a review - I think that many adults assume that they know the facts more than they really do, so this is a beautiful way to correct that!)

After browsing through many options available on Amazon, I selected this book for my three-year-old, who has a baby sister and knows several other newly-arrived babies. The illustrations immediately appealed to me, and although the book is 40 years old, it does not disappoint. The facts are laid out clearly, and the text has a calm, straightforward tone. The illustrations are artistic, realistic, and gentle, and in fact the entire book is lovely. The language used was easy for me to read, and for my three-year-old to digest. This is a sure bet for being a good place to start if you have a little one who is or will soon be curious to know where babies come from- you can't go wrong. I wish it was still in print and more widely available.

This is a colorful book that is a great way when I come to the age old question that all children will ask their parents where they came from without ever getting choked up about it ,or blushing three shades of red with embarrassment . The illustration are excellent, which is also appropriate for younger children.

Best book for children, literally from preschool through middle childhood. Pictures, that others have called graphic, are tasteful and realistic, the most developmentally appropriate introduction to anatomy for children.

I love the book! I have a 5-year-old son, and a 3-year-old daughter, and they ask to read this book at night often. It's simple, but honest. It doesn't sugar coat anything, but its not too detailed to be obscene. The paintings are tasteful, and it definitely opens up a line of communication between my children and me that would have been harder to cross without this book.
