My fall from suburban grace, or, more accurately, my failure to achieve the merest molehill of suburban grace from which to fall, began with a dinner party and a perfectly innocent, modestly clever, and only faintly quirky remark about Armand Assante.

“Marisa de los Santos’s Belong to Me is my favorite discovery of the past years: a terrific page-turner that’s also poignant, funny, surprising and deeply heartfelt.”—Harlan Coben “Complex, engaging, and surprisingly moving.”—Boston Globe

The sensational New York Times bestseller from Marisa de los Santos, Belong to Me is a gift for readers, an enchanting, luminous novel about the accidents, both big and small, that affect our choice of friend, lover, and spouse. A story centered around three very different suburban neighbors and what it truly means to “belong” to someone, this eye-opening, unforgettable book is the perfect book club selection—beautifully written, smart and sophisticated women’s fiction that invites discussion as it touches the heart—and the ideal companion to de los Santos’s previous blockbuster, Love Walked In.

I thoroughly enjoyed the characters in this book...all were bigger than life, which some may find unrealistic, but since reading is an escape...why not escape to a place where people all think aloud are above average in intelligence and have generous ,expansive hearts?

Some are content to tell a story, and that is an art...many readers are content to read that story...For some of us who may have been accused of "thinking too much"...the story is not complete without the psychology behind the actions...This is what I enjoyed about this book. The author loves words and uses them well...to paint a story, create a mood or pull at heart strings...We are all complex characters, seeking validation searching for acceptance and love...

I wanted to like this. I was interested in the idea of Cornelia uprooting from the city and making a new life in the not-so-welcoming suburbs. That story line seemed to start off promising, but then was simply glossed over and pushed aside. I also liked the theme of searching for connections, for that sense of belonging, whether it's the family we're born into or the one that we choose for ourselves. But for the most part, any interesting tension was just dissolved too easily, and in the end it was one big cheese-fest.

I did love the writing, the author's use of language. Unfortunately, it really didn't work in the construct of this story, and was much too lofty and pretentious to be coming out of the characters mouths as dialogue or even as their thoughts. In fact, I found it hard to keep track of what each character actually said, because it would get all tangled up in their lengthy, convoluted internal monologues. Here's one example - comparing someone's expression shutting down to a camera lens closing - went on for several paragraphs at least. Then, it seemed as though the author tried to anticipate our eye-rolling, and would have the characters immediately say or think something like (I'm paraphrasing ) "I know how lame that sounds," or "forgive me while I quote Kierkegaard here." Once or twice, she might have gotten away with it, but it happens over and over.

Another thing that got on my nerves was how all of the characters seemed to have an uncanny ability to read so much into someone else's facial expression, the look in their eyes, or their body language. And not just something simple, but here again, much too long and complex thoughts, feelings, and intentions. Everyone was just far too clever, hyper-articulate, beautiful, even when they were being deceitful or mean. Basically, I felt that she relied too heavily on caricature, which is probably why I couldn't relate to any of them, or care much about them or the outcome. I might be curious to read something else by this author (maybe her poetry?) but I'd also be rather wary of this type of fiction, as doesn't seem to fit her very well.

My bookclub will read this next. I am eager to share this gem with them.

The depth of the characters, the insight into friendship and families, the shared understand and chemistry makes you feel connected. Maybe no recognition to your world but none the less families you can relate to, feel comfortable with there unique bond and willingness to be connected. Enjoyed this story the characters and the story telling. Thank you Marisa, hope these characters reflect the warmth of those who fill your life and feel your love. You are certainly lucky. All I can say is thank you for sharing.

Sappy? Sure. Predictable? I didn't think so. I fell in love with Dev, with his thought processes, with his curiosity. Great characterization of a brilliant child who's imperfect but lovable.

I've met Piper. I've heard her speak and judge. How delightful that the author allowed her to grow and change instead of keeping her pigeonholed. I thought the growth realistic. Sometimes it takes a life revolution to prod one into new territory, and Piper certainly had this on several levels.

Teo (in this case, short for Matteo and in my second book, short for Teodoro) may be a little too perfect, but making him shy of his beauty was a graceful touch. Cornelia's struggles work for me, and the relationship between this husband and wife speaks to what I only discovered late in life: that being married to one's best friend is a rather perfect place to be.

I love Marisa's writing. It's not self-conscious, but instead flows, sliding from one word to the next, one sentence into another. I laughed out loud at some parts, sighed in others.

And for those folk who hate happy endings, here's a warning in case you missed the other reviews: it ends happily. For which I am very grateful.

Thank you to the Facebook friend who recommended I read this author's work. A new favorite.

Ms de los Santos gives us a sketch of each character and then throughout in a very sensitive and compassionate view let's us see that first impressions can be totally in error. I heartily enjoyed this book and am excited that the author is prolific because I certainly want to read more of what she has to say.

This book was good but I thought it was a bit wordy. Maybe it's just the authors style of writing. Great story line with a twist I didn't see coming. Wonderful love story. Teaches us some lessons in understanding other people and first impressions. I hope everyone lives "happily ever after", they deserve it.
