A Summer Affair book. I really like Elin Hilderbrand's books. I grew up on the Jersey shore, I've been to Wildwood Crest. Love the beach settings. This novel almost glorifies her behavior when the novel ends and she still hasn't told her husband the truth about her behavior.

They had one thousand guests. and Siobhan, all of whom were in the office, ironing out the catering details. Also on Monday, the late summer issue of NanMag was released, featuring the article about Nantucket’s Children and. The summer gala. The text of the article was long, and preachy about the cause in some places, but no worries-few people would actually read it. What mattered were the photographs!

A Summer Affair: A Novel Hilderbrand, Erin Hachette Book Group 9780316018616 : Shes the perfect wife and mother-and hes the perfect temptation in this perfect summer cocktail of sex, sun . A Summer Affair captures the love, loss, and limbo of an illicit romance and unchecked passion as it takes us on a brave and breathless journey into the heart of one modern woman.

Claire Danner Crispin, mother of four young children and nationally renowned glassblower, bites off more than she can chew when she agrees to co-chair the Nantucket's Children Summer Gala. Claire is asked to chair the benefit, in part, because she is the former high school sweetheart of rock star Max West. Max agrees to play the gala and it looks like smooth sailing for Claire-until she promises a "museum-quality" piece of glass for the auction, offers her best friend the catering job, goes nose-to-nose with her Manhattan socialite co-chair, and begins a "good-hearted" affair with the charity's Executive Director, Lockhart Dixon.Hearts break and emotions are pushed to the limit in this riveting story of one woman's attempt to deal with loves past and present, family, business, and high-powered social pressures. Elin Hilderbrand's unique understanding of the joys and longings that animate women's lives will make this her newest summer bestseller.

I wanted a beach read and this fit the bill. The characters had enough depth to keep my attention. I wanted a book whose characters were of a certain age and with that, the challenges we face as we approach middle age. All in all this book was just the type of read I was looking for.

Loved this book! I didn't want it to end. All of Elin Hilderbrand's books are so good and you really feel like you know the characters. Go get all of her books and read them!

Earlier this year I read The Castaways: A Novel and wasn't thrilled with it, so I wanted to find another Hilderbrand book that would take me back to how I felt about The Blue Bistro or Summer People: A Novel. A Summer Affair did it for me. Skimming the reviews, I see that a lot of people had a major problem with the main character, Claire, because of her adultery. This story line is pretty much the main point of the book - Claire's affair gets you thinking about what you might do in a similar situation. Her husband is a bit of a jerk until he no longer has all of his wife's attention, and then he becomes affectionate and communicative. There are a lot of characters in this novel and each one has his/her own complex story, but not in a way that is distracting from the plot. I read this book in two days because I didn't want to put it down.

What a shame. Got to page 29 where I read "The charity was called Nantucket's Children; it was for people who cared deeply about children, which generally meant having one or more of your own." Stopped reading this book and will never buy another one by this author. Many people who do not have children (either by choice or due to circumstances beyond their control) care DEEPLY for children. You just lost a fan.

As usual, I enjoyed Hilderbrand’s beach novel prose and story. My problem is I don’t believe the ending...it isn’t an ending. If anyone believes this protagonist will walk away unscathed, they’re dreaming. The next morning, the affair, the embezzlement, all of it is going to hit the fan. Good idea to end it on the weekend...Monday’s coming.

When Claire Danner Crispin---wife, mother and artist---agrees to chair the Summer Gala on Nantucket, she doesn't realize that she is turning her life upside down. But then, as Claire describes herself, she is a person with "no boundaries". She can't say no, and she allows others to use her.

What seems like an ordinary social event becomes a trip into obsession...First, Claire finds herself drawn more and more to the director of the event, a somewhat sad, but wealthy man, whose wife has turned into a bitter, angry creature after an unfortunate car accident left her "impaired" mentally. An accident that Claire blames on herself, as she and her friends failed to persuade their inebriated friend to take a cab that night.

Then Claire has to revisit an old love...Matthew, a now famous rock star. Her task is to convince him to do a concert for the gala.

And finally, Claire is persuaded to create a museum piece for the event...she is a semi-retired glass-blower, who has previously created such pieces. But because Claire had an accident in her "hot shop" while pregnant with her youngest child, and because that child was born prematurely and may have been damaged, Claire meets resistance from her husband, who is bitter and angry about her obsession with her art. And blames her for what happened to their baby.

All of these events combine to create the perfect maelstrom for what then transpires. The guilt, the angst, the neediness...these feelings lend vulnerability to Claire's life, somehow causing it to spin completely out of control.

Over a period of a year, while Claire and others on the committee team up to create the perfect event, there is almost an inevitability in how things play out.

Does Claire find the love she lost in her marriage? Can she recreate the "perfect" first love with her rock star ex-boyfriend? Will she be able to create that museum piece, while juggling all the balls in her life? What, finally, will happen when the Summer Gala is presented, and
will Claire find the answers she seeks?

What could have been just an ordinary beach read has turned into an exploration of the human needs, flaws and urges that plague all of us at one time or another. Ms. Hilderbrand skillfully leads us down a path of discovery...not just of the characters in the story, but of our own human frailties.

A wonderfully engaging tale of human self-discovery.

This was such a good book! Claire is a retired glass-blowing mom of four living full time in Nantucket. She is asked by the richest man on Nantucket to co-chair the committee for Nantucket's Children charity, begin glass-blowing again to make the auction piece, and call in a favor from her ex-boyfriend who is a huge rock star for the entertainment. Claire feels the need to agree to it and puts her family life on hold for the next year.

In the very beginning of her co-chairing responsibilities, she falls for the executive director and things start to heat up quickly. The lying and sneaking and problems as co-chair are enough to keep anyone entertained!
I loved loved this book. Such a great story, such great lovable characters. Thank you for another great read. Highly recommend
