Shining Through, by Susan Isaacs was one of my favorite books about 30+ years ago and I hadn't read anything else til now. This one is truly
"almost paradise" of a read: real, raw, wonderful characters, social history told through this true love story. I loved it and did not want it to end.

"When you read a book, you hold another's mind in your hands." (James Burke) I would say that Susan Isaacs is able to hold her reader's mind
in her hands as she writes a novel like this one. I could live in this novel as her many generations of women characters. Could I be Jane, or Winifred or mean Dorothy or the matriarch of a wealthy family? Of course I could while reading Susan Isaacs. There is such vitality in her
people, I feel their blood pulse through my veins. Brava, Susan Isaacs. I will be reading many more of her novels; got them lined up and on
order already.

Susan Isaacs is an author whose books I usually love (have read "Shining Through" several times), so I was excited when I found one that I hadn't read. Unfortunately, I hated this. The characters, for the most part, are so unlikable. Most of the men are unfaithful to their wives. There's a lot of pretty kinky sex--I'm not a prude but this was too much. There are so many characters that it becomes difficult to remember who's who. The ending is terrible. It's a pretty long book, so don't waste your time with this one.

The story about the main characters was excellent, but I was confused and impatient by the back stories of two or three generations before Nick and Jane. I was hopeful it would have a good ending, but was terribly disappointed by Jane's abrupt death and no resolution at all to the beautiful love story. Even if the author had included an epilogue to tell us how Nick was able to carry on with life, it would have been more satisfying. My mother loved the book, and it's obvious from many of the reviews here, that others did, too. But I was left feeling incomplete. Maybe that was Susan Isaacs' intention, to make us experience the pain of the loss.

This book had me right from the start. The story was interesting and I really enjoyed the whole family saga. Of course Jane and Nick were made for each other. Of course Jane and Nick were meant to be.

And then boom the ending knocked me right off my seat and not in a good way. That's all I'm going to say. It's up to you if you want to put yourself through the wringer this book turned out to be.

My favorite of all Ms. Isaacs' books. A true love story, high-concept and captivating. I love her writing and am always on the lookout for a new book by her, but this has been the one I read again and again. Love it and cannot recommend it enough to readers who want a tender love story presented on a big stage with larger-than-life, real characters by a writer who knows how to keep a reader turning the pages. Great book.

Very good. A long family saga that is an interesting story and keeps you turning pages. It's a very human story and makes you really feel. Nick and Jane Cobleigh, the main characters have fame, talent and lots of passion. I would definitely recommend this....especially for a summer read. This was my first Susan Isaacs novel and I really enjoyed it.

I read this years ago and just re-read it. As always great character development as two people in a great love match grapple with family dynamics, rags-to-riches and stardom.
Tragedy, mental illness, alcoholism, marital infidelity all come into play.
Great light read!
I wanted this book on my Kindle but I've owned a copy for years. A great read from an excellent writer.
