Susan Kyle, née Susan Eloise Spaeth (born December 11, 1946, in Cuthbert, Georgia, United States) is an American writer who was known as Diana Palmer and has published romantic novels since 1979. She has also written romances as Diana Blayne, Katy Currie, and under her married name Susan Kyle and a science fiction novel as Susan S. Kyle. Before writing fiction, she was a journalist for sixteen years under her birth name.

When she sees something that could implicate a popular politician in a murder investigation, Carlie Blair, gifted with a photographic memory, discovers that the only person who can protect her is a man she despises—a cold-hearted mercenary named Carson. (romance).

Comments:

grand star
THE STORY: Carlie Blair is in trouble. Someone seems determined to kidnap and/or kill her. She works for a small town police department and either her job or her father's mysterious past may be at the root of the attacks on her. Carlie has another problem and his name is Carson. Carson is a mercenary who after being betrayed by his wife is determined to spend the rest of his life alone. Carlie and Carson have an attraction but everyone in town knows that the man who never intends to commit and the woman with old fashioned values are not a good fit.

OPINION: I was interested in this story and the characters although I didn't feel that there was enough to distinguish it from similar Palmer books. The mystery of what was threatening Carlie was interesting, but there were some parts that were too incredible to be believed. Despite this, I liked how Carson and Carlie had a relationship that was not based on physical attraction alone. This is the kind of book that is adequate for a one time read but doesn't have staying power that makes a reader think of the characters or story and want to return again.

WORTH MENTIONING: Palmer is still writing about characters with traditional morals and the only sex is within the bounds of marriage.

FINAL DECISION: This book was an adequate one time read, but there was nothing in the story to elevate it to a read again book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: INVINCIBLE is connected both to the Long, Tall Texans series and also the Wyoming Men series. This book can be read independent of those books, but there are recurring characters.

STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars.

I've been a long-time avid reader of Diana Palmer from her Silhouette days. All her books made for hot, breathless read.

So, I say this with great reluctance...I was so bored by this book that I haven't even finished it. Maybe it's because I'm significantly older than I was when I began reading Ms. Palmer's book (early 20's) and have aged (and hopefully matured) but I can't help but notice that all the females in her books are young, (nearly) virginal, sassy yet shy heroine who's pureness and goodness always work to tame even the most hardened, jaded rogue. And all the men are big, jaded, cold-hearted, merciless, ruthless but putty in the heroine's tiny, delicate hands.

He always tries to 'run' her off because she's too 'good' for him but she, in her virginal purity, manages to 'tame' him...and they live happily ever after.

Again, maybe it's because I'm older (and hopefully wiser) but I would dearly love to see Ms. Palmer (or any long-standing writer) write a book about an older woman (30/40's) who can kick ass and does the rescuing.

Sure women like to imagine themselves as princesses rescued by the prince, but some of us princesses know that in the real world, we either have to rescue ourselves or rescue the prince.

If you've not read the author's previous books about the characters/locations in this book, you can skip this one. Although nothing in the description or the title indicates that it's not the first in a series, reading it is like walking in half way through a movie. The author makes constant references to events and people as if the reader should be aware of them in order to understand what's going on in Invincible, but they're not part of this book. I can't even tell to which book the other characters belong, so (without research) I can't go get the other book to figure it out. It's extremely frustrating. Since I'm obviously missing most of the story, I've chosen to put the book down at about half way and not continue.

I have read DP's for decades and enjoyed her earlier books much more than her recent mercenary series titles. Her plots have become lack-luster and repetitive, her heroines cookie-cutter virgos (DP has become over-preachy regarding chastity), and her personal battle with asthma has found its way into stories too often. (I also suffer from asthma, not as severely as DP, but am finding it a tiresome character device.) At least Carson, the hero in this story, was not the much older experienced character DP frequently uses. (Can we say double standard regarding chastity and Daddy complex?) Carson had appeared in several other DP novels, so I was anticipating his story, which unfortunately was not that interesting. I also found Carlie, the heroine, to be quite insipid at times. Based on the declining quality of several of DP's recent hard-back novels' plots, I may wait until the paperback edition is released so I do not feel cheated for paying the higher price.

I think this book was written to set up future books, since Diana Palmer has pretty much written about everyone in Jacobsville. New names were mentioned that I had never come across before in past books. I found the story boring and slow going, without the usual angst Palmer writes with.

SPOILER:
What I didn't understand was, Carlie's father Jake Blair in his old life used to be a mercenary. And not just a regular mercenary, but a very gifted one in the same class a Cash Grier. So given that, and in all the books Palmer has written about mercenaries, all of them are rich with lots of money in foreign banks. So why was Jake poor? Also, I never understood why Jake was targeted for assassination?
