In a world inhabited by sentient and ambulatory plants, who grow in the earth, Duwan was a warrior in the far north, whence his people fled. Wounded, he seeks healing in the far South, where Du's rays are strong. But he never counted on the wily and devoted Jai, or how moved he would be by the slavery of her people.
This is a tale of quest, growing up, love, and a fight for freedom, complete with some odd bits. The author explains in an afterword how some of the ideas developed.
If you like solid, fast-moving adventure tales, then this book is worth reading. Along with *Karan* by Wongar, and *Speaker for the Dead* by Card, this is one of three books I know of where the hero is a tree.

And so Duwan left the valley, seeking this fabled paradise. But what he found was the Enemy, the dominant, less evolved form of his species called Devourers, who lived by preying upon other life forms. The Devourers, who, ages ago, had driven the Drinkers from their homeland, intent on their total destruction. Yet to Duwan's horror, he found Drinkers too, Drinkers enslaved by cruel Devourer overlords! And suddenly Duwan understands why his destiny had brought him here-to lead his people to freedom!
