I teach a course on literary appreciation, and I am using this book and another, Great American Short Stories, in the course. The stories are by major American writers and cover writers from Hawthorne to Cheever. They provide a sense of the development of American literature as well as being entertaining in and of themselves. This book and the companion selection sell for under $4.00.They are bargains that belong in everyone's library who has an interest in or love of short fiction.

Good collection in easy to hold book.

This is a collection of well known writers and some of their short stories. Some are classically well known, some are a bit more obscure. Easy read.

just ok so far, have not read all.

I found that some of the stories were e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y tedious. I have difficulty figuring out why some of them were called "masterpieces." However, the ones I did like, I enjoyed very much.
This is an anthology of fourteen classic short stories by such writers as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Willa Cather, Eudora Welty and William Faulkner. In terms of their publication date, these stories span a 108 year period from 1839 (Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher”) to Cheever’s “The Enormous Radio” in 1947.
“The Golden Honeymoon” is one of my favorites. A middle class couple in New Jersey take a train trip to St. Petersburg, Florida, in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. While there, they meet an unusual couple, play cards with them, and discover a long lost connection.
Another favorite is Edith Wharton’s ”Xinju.” Wharton describes a women’s Lunch Club meeting and reveals a keen sense of humor as each member tries to outdo the others in front of a visiting celebrity. Mark Twain amuses us in his usual outrageous fashion when an American finds himself in London and the object of a bet between two Englishmen. He carries a one million pound (sterling) bank note around the city, using it to pay for meals and clothing, but of course no merchant can give him the change. Instead, he’s given a large line of credit and becomes an instant celebrity.
In “The Open Boat,” Stephen Crane builds on a tense situation; four men are at sea in a small dinghy after their ship has been destroyed. The foursome continue to battle the elements as they near the Florida coast and fear they may not be able to overcome a strong surf hitting the beach.
I had difficulty with “The Beast in the Jungle” by Henry James. His prose is detailed, ornate and resembles a jungle of dense thickets. It’s difficult trying to decipher just what he’s trying to say.
The book is available in paperback for a modest $3.50 and would be a nice companion for the beach or a long plane ride.
