Her voice was distinctly separate from the other children's voices, and not just because she was seated . I turned around and just missed brushing noses with Esme's small brother. I prefer stories about squalor. About what?" I said, leaning forward.

Her voice was distinctly separate from the other children's voices, and not just because she was seated nearest me. It had the best upper register, the sweetest-sounding, the surest, and it automatically led the way. The young lady, however, seemed slightly bored with her own singing ability, or perhaps just with the time and place; twice, between verses, I saw her yawn.

I found To Esme – With Love and Squalor a story about the effects of war on an individual stayed with me for days. Perfect Day for Banafish," "For Esme - With Love and Squalor," and "The Laughing Man" are to me the peaks of short fiction. It’s so simply written, and yet, packs so much emotion and observation on the state of war and the mental and physical drain it can take on one person. From the one line note about a twitch on the face, to a shaky hand, the subtle differences from the first half of the story to the second half create an overall dreadful vision. Salinger's "Nine Stories" should be renamed "How to Write Short Stories.

For Esme With Love and Squalor includes two of Salinger's most famous and critically acclaimed stories. The story "For Esme with Love and Squalor" is one of the nine stories in this collection. I remember a critic who wrote that "Esme", the story, was a gloss on the Dostoevski quote Sergeant X writes down. I bought into this at first. With closer reading I find I disagree with this. The quote Sergeant X writes is a way of reaching out and communicating to the Nazi lady,(Salinger actually married a Nazi lady he had arrested after the war, divorce soon followed

Including the first stories to feature Salinger's beloved Glass family characters. Salinger was born in 1919 and died in January 2010. He grew up in New York City, and wrote short stories from an early age, but his breakthrough came in 1948 with the publication in the New Yorker of 'A Perfect Day for Bananafish'. The Catcher in the Rye was his first and only novel, published in 1951. It remains one of the most translated, taught and reprinted texts, and has sold some 65 million copies.

Despite being in England with sixty other soldiers, at no stage of the story does X.I will surely check all the books you wrote above. And I will let you know. Looking at the relationship between both X and Esme as a silent love. I hadn’t thought about it when I read the story

Despite being in England with sixty other soldiers, at no stage of the story does X socialize with any of his fellow soldiers. Similarly when Clay is taking to Sergeant X the reader senses that Sergeant X does not enjoy Clay’s company. There appears to be some distance between both men, despite the physical closeness between the two of them as they are talking. I hadn’t thought about it when I read the story. I was immediately drawn to the possibility of a father-daughter relationship.

For Esmé-with Love and Squalor" is a short story by J. D. Salinger. It recounts a sergeant's meeting with a young girl before being sent into combat in World War II. Originally published in The New Yorker on April 8, 1950, it was anthologized in Salinger's Nine Stories two years later (while the story collection's American title is Nine Stories, it is titled as "For Esmé-with Love & Squalor" in most countries).

This well told tale hits deep. Salinger writes brilliant dialog that leaves us knowing the characters not just hearing them speak, and "For Esme..." is a story that has not left me alone since I read it.

After seeing a program on PBS about Salinger, I decided to revisit some of work. I had never read For Esme etc and now wish I was in a book club or literature class to really dig into the stories in this book. Salinger's writing is the kind of work that stays with you and you continue to think about it and want to re-read it. I don't think of Salinger as an "exceptional" author, like Hemingway or Faulkner, but it is certainly very deep.

There are no books written by JD Salinger which I do not love. I love the way he emphasizes parts of words with italics. This is a good book.

Great book of short stories. Love the author and all of his work. durable book. enjoy J.D's books and all of his works.
Most of these stories have been published elsewhere. Nonetheless, it's good to revisit them. Salinger is, of course, a master.
