Ten years have gone by since the last review of this work, and that reviewer's judgment still stands valid. Lewis's granular discussion of French poetry teaches the reader to understand that French poetry is indeed poetry. Helpful in this matter is the proliferation of readings of French poetry on Youtube. Most of Lewis's many examples are there. Of course it helps that Lewis chooses from among the more famous poems of the language. Frequently more than one reading exists, letting the listener choose a pleasing voice or overall rendition.

It must be re-emphasized that On Reading French Verse is not for beginners.

The "rules" of French verse can seem a bit mysterious, to say the least, to readers encountering them for the first time. While there are plenty of books (most of them written in French) to help explain these puzzles, Roy Lewis' is one of the best written in English. Lewis begins with the "obvious" (but all-too-neglected in practice!) idea that poetry is meant to be read aloud. The sound of the French language is, in Lewis' book, the key to everything - scansion, the Alexandrine, stanza and rhyme, and the interplay of sound and meaning.

A very experienced teacher, Lewis is able to guide his readers through such complexities as rhythm and pitch, stable and unstable lines, syllabification, the neutral "e" (different rules in verse vs. prose!), vowel length, hiatus, and elision -and all this takes us only up to page 39! Every point is explained by the author's clear thinking and writing, and illustrated by numerous examples - over 300 line quotations from Ronsard, Hugo, Baudelaire, Verlaine, etc.

Prerequisites: To get much out of this book, the reader should be fluent in *spoken* French, since the book is so oriented to the spoken language. If you are comfortable with this prerequisite, then Lewis will be an outstanding guide.
