Series: Johns Hopkins: Poetry and Fiction. XJ Kennedy is an icon and his poetry is magnificent, if somewhat obscure. I suppose that's the criteria for most poetry which is why I'm not a poetry fan. At least, with Kennedy, I understand most of what he's presenting; for example, with "Nude Descending a Staircase," looking at the painting while reading the poem is an unforgettable experience.
Barry Spacks was born in Philadelphia in 1931. A recipient of the St. Botolph’s Arts Award, Spacks published nine poetry collections, the most extensive being Spacks Street: New and Selected Poems (1982), which won the Commonwealth Club of California's Poetry Medal. He taught literature at MIT and University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2013 he published a collection of short stories, There's Always a Girl.
