Drawing from every stage of the Nobel laureate's career, Derek Walcott's Selected Poems brings together famous pieces from his early volumes.

Derek Mahon is widely regarded as one of the most talented and innovative Irish poets of the late 20th century. Affiliated with the generation of young poets from Northern Ireland who rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s, Mahon is best known for illuminating the ordinary aspects of daily life through his skillfully crafted verse. Often working in received forms, Mahon’s lucid, sculpted lines incorporate both classical allusion and contemporary life. Critics have compared his poetry to that of such masters as . Auden, the poet and classical scholar Louis MacNeice, and Samuel Beckett.

Selected Poems 1930–1989. Derek Mahon, otherwise one of Beckett’s strongest admirers, finds the poem’s parade of learning altogether too loutish. However, if ‘Whoroscope’ must finally be judged (in its own words) the ‘abortion of a fledgling’, it sets a tone of what Murphy calls ‘eleutheromania’, or rage for freedom, that Beckett will follow in his later poems and their more successful puncturing of the embryos of callow youth.

Mahon’s first selected poems was in 1979, since when he has published two further selected poems and two collected poems .

Derek Mahon, from Selected Poems

Derek Mahon, from Selected Poems. I first read Derek Mahon’s ‘Everything is Going to be All Right’ as an undergraduate, somewhere towards the end of my degree, at a stage of life when everything did indeed seem hopeful and untainted by disaster and breakdown. My reaction on reading it is was a kind of falling in love, infatuation followed by obsession, taking the book in which I found it (a library copy of his Selected Poems) everywhere and checking every ten minutes to see if it was still there.

Presents selections from the author's five previous volumes of poetry, including many concerned with the conditions of life in Northern Ireland

Excellent. Excellent. Excellent.

By the way, this Penguin book has the COMPLETE text of "In Memoriam." The Everyman's edition does not.

Tennyson is an amazing writer, one of my favorites next to Whitman. The poems are so well written and easy to read and understand.

The Kindle edition is broken. The text is abnormally large and absurdly formatted, which is genuinely distracting. Also, there is no access to the table of contents, why? Who knows? I have wasted about $3 on this, please do not do the same. I for one will be converting back to paper.

Rereading Tennyson is being brought back to a world of poetry as music. It is hypnotizing harmonizing character of Tennyson's writing which at first most strikes. No wonder he wrote 'Lotus-Eaters' and so often seemed to dream his poems into being. I am not really a close student of his work but this small economically priced Anthology contains the most notable small works, including a poem that I believe belongs in any Anthology of the world's most memorable poems. i.e. Ulysses.
Forgive me if I indulge myself in this review by enjoying writing down some of the most memorable lines of this great poet's work.
(Closing lines of 'Ulysses')

" Old age hath yet his honor and his toil.
Death closes all;but something ere the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks;
The long day wanes;the slow moon climbs; the deep
Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends,
'Tis not too late to seek a new world,
Push off,and sitting well in order smite
The surrounding furrows;for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down,
It may be we shall touch the Happy Islaes,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew
Tho much is taken, much abides;and tho
we are not that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are , we are,-
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."
This is a great compilation. Tennyson is a good communicator who brings and element of mystery and chivalry in his poems. "The Lady of Shalott" is haunting and compelling at the same time. He loved to explore historical themes and the Arthurian Camelot legends.

"Maud" is a brilliant work of art. It is a great narrative that shows the gamut of emotions and explores the issues of life and death. The rhyme scheme is pleasant and he has a way with words to stir passions, contemplations, and reflection.

My favorite Tennyson poem is "The Charge of the Light Brigade" I especially love the line:

"Forward, the Light Brigade!"
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Some one had blunder'd.
Their not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of death
Rode the six hundred.

Tennyson liked to use honor and duty as themes in his poetry. It was important to accept the inevitable with resignation, but steely resolve. Acting with valor was more important than victory and defeat to him.

Tennyson was a master. He is one of my favorite poets. He loved to explore legends and historical accounts. His poetry is poignant and compelling. He was a talented wordsmith who painted vivid pictures and inspired men and women.
