Steve Fellner’s collection of poems, The Weary World Rejoices, has much more weariness in it. .

Steve Fellner’s collection of poems, The Weary World Rejoices, has much more weariness in it than rejoicing, but that is only because, as he writes i.As he moves out from this opening, Fellner shows us a scene where the speaker is having sex for the first time with a man whose children are being entertained by watching The Muppet Show, while their father is in the bedroom with the speaker. The contrast of innocence and the loss of it is only heightened by how the situation must be kept secret. The absurdity of life is reinforced by the following poem, one of three prose poems Fellner writes with his husband, Phil E. Young, titled Doctor’s Note, which opens

Steve Fellner is not afraid to be unlikeable, which is precisely why I trust him completely. These are poems of rage and shame, confession in its purest sensenot employed to elicit sympathy or shock but because the stakes are very high: tell the truth or cease to exist. Something is All Screwed Up in Steve Fellner s comic and heart-tugging memoir, but it is not Fellner s ability to see clearly and write crisply about his quirky, impoverished childhood. Fellner s deadpan chronicle of his painful attempts to fit into a world that wasn t having any of it is fresh, compelling, off-kilter, and full of heart. -Dinty W. Fellners work evokes the trope of a ship of fools or a set of the ludicrously-dressed damned. One of his speakers drinks straight from the bottle, another pretends to believe "fanged anorexic midget space aliens want to rape our pets," -- the catalogue of speakers goes on from there: receiver of a suicide note, people waiting in line for God's judgment, Satan "dressed in well-ironed khakis/and a pink Polo shirt." It also comes up that we are one of the species "that has the capacity to fall in love with humans who look just like us yet strangely never love us back... that there may not be enough love in the world to write about." Popcorn, Socrates, Li Po, Cliff's Notes, Joice Heth, and Catullus get stirred into the mix.

Fellner is not sloppy. Nor is he a muddy writer, he separates the Absurd from the Surreal. The intentionally transgressive nature of his poetics is in-line with Caravaggio. Though, in many ways alike, Fellner's enterprise is less romantic. One has a feeling he might refuse the final rise to metaphor and see, not the holy virgin, but--only the street whore-model; not the saint, but the untransformed sinner dolled up and posed. Fellner is oddly both catholic and pagan--a bit like Blake with his songs of Innocence and Experience. Both this and his earlier book, "Blind Date With Cavafy" are heartful and first rate!

On the back cover of The Weary World Rejoices, Paisley Rekdal says in her blurb that lots of collections claim to be edgy, but Fellner's poems are not only truly edgy but "frightening." I couldn't agree more. Rarely does a poet have the courage to take you right to the edge and then push you off the cliff, but Fellner does.

This is confessional work that truly takes the next step in stripping the poet bare and to the bone. If there really is such a thing as "post-confessional," Fellner is surely mining it here with images so direct and bloody that it might make Anne Sexton drop her cigarette into her martini. No one is spared in these poems: crazy mom, meth-addicted dead lover, successful friends and the poet himself, who puts his own flaws and tenuous mental health under the microscope for all to see. Narcissistic, body-obsessed gay men are pummeled in one breath and forgiven in the next, because who can blame them for wanting to stay thin, beautiful and immortal in a world where so many consider them inhuman.

And that brings us to the final cycle of poems dedicated to Matthew Shepard. You might think there is nothing left to say about the young, gay man tortured in a field near Laramie, but Fellner eulogizes Shepard and wisely does not speak for him, but "near him." Reading this sequence - the collection's best work - reminded me how quickly horror is shunted away, stripped of its visceral impact as time passes. LGBT people remain at risk, put themselves in risky situations, act out, and search for love in a world that continues to preach that the love they seek is wrong.

If you're looking for prosaic landscapes and hummingbirds, look elsewhere. There are birds here, but they are vultures swooping and diving on the carcass and there is a terrible beauty in that as well.
