Death of a Lady's Man book. Leonard Norman Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist. Cohen published his first book of poetry in Montreal in 1956 and his first novel in 1963.

Death of a Lady's Man book. Cohen's earliest songs (many of which appeared on the 1968 album Songs of Leonard Cohen) were rooted in European folk music melodies and instrumentation, sung in a high baritone. The 1970s were a musically restless period in which his Leonard Norman Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist.

Death of a Ladies' Man is the fifth studio album by Leonard Cohen. Produced and co-written by Phil Spector, the voice of typically minimalist Cohen was surrounded by Spector's Wall of Sound, which included multiple tracks of instrument overdubs. The album was originally released by Warner Bros. but was later picked up by Cohen's long-time label, Columbia Records.

Death of a Ladies Man tends to be an unwelcome album for many Cohen fans. It seems as if they were depending on another Songs of Leonard Cohen or Songs of Love and Hate. Disappointed or irritated could be used to describe how some fans felt when Cohen broke his folk bubble much in the same way fans were aghast when 'Dylan went electric'. Others resent the wall-of-sound or pop interference brought on by Phil Spector. For whatever reasons, Death of a Ladies' Man has become one of the most maligned albums in the Cohen catalog.

Death of a Ladies’ Man (1977) bears the discordant fingerprints of tyrant producer Phil Spector, but I’m Your Man (1988) was a potent elegy against war, AIDS and the graft of writing.

This is a review of the book (not the music album) and it is amazing well of annotated reflections, Called here a collection of poetry, it is rather a psychological autobiography. Best enjoyed after reading Sylvie Simmons' I'm Your Man for some life details/ perspective before delving into the deep end of the pool here. Have still had to come up for air frequently. These periodically harsh but truthfilled words reasonated unexpectedly.

This is Cohens darkest album as he was in a manic state while recording this master work. The title track is one of his best lyrical works ever. A song about despair and love lost fade into a Death of A Ladies Man.

I am a great fan of Leonard Cohen, who has finally become a legend in the U.S. He had reach legendary status in Europe long ago and in his home country of Canada some years ago. His songs are not for everyone's taste, some require a bit of thought. The songs on this CD were recorded during a drug and alcohol induced haze at the Phil Spector studio in Hollywood back in 1977. Phil Spector, the genius, crazy guy who went to jail for shooting his girlfriend. An HBO movie recently appeared with Al Pacino in the title role. After the recording was finished Cohen said he never ever wanted to have anything to do with Spector again and he never did. These songs don't appear on any other CD to the best of my knowledge.

Everyone knows Songs from a Room and Songs of Love and Hate, but this is and amazing album. This album is a collaboration with the great Phil Spector and you can hear the influence throughout, with the grandiose production and female backup singers.

Not surprisingly, the lyrics are peopled with the same kind of characters and depicts the same strained, or failed relationships Cohen fans have come to know and love. Despite a newly rich and fuller sound brought on by instrumental accompaniment, the familiar gloomy Cohen atmosphere still remains. Rather than being weighed down by Spector's efforts, Cohen's voice is still the commanding force. Regardless of what the critics say, it's just as listenable as any of his other albums. "Fingerprints" would be my only real complaint. This song is a trip to the barn complete with square-dancing, flying chickens, and vinyl cowboy boots. Did Cohen toss in this song as a joke, something to throw people off, or did he want to add in something snappy to give the album a lift? Unfortunately, it seems that "Fingerprints" happened when Cohen and Spector had one too many drinks. Cast aside "Paper-Thin Hotel", "Memories", "I Left a Woman Waiting", and "Death of a Ladies' Man", and you're casting away another integral part of Cohen.

Cohen never fails to engage me. This reads like a book written with his back against a wall, swimming in late nights and substance-fueled recrimination, and ultimately aimed towards catharsis. I'm sure if Cohen finds that catharsis - the collection seems to end more in exhaustion and resignation. Some of the prose poems and traditionally structured verse succumb to self-indulgence and cast off the discipline that marks so much of Cohen's work and, admittedly, the bile directed at himself and some of his subjects can be overwhelming at moments. It is, however, ruthlessly honest in that moment. Cohen spares no one and, 30 plus years since its initial publication, this neglected collection represents another critical phase in the writer's personal and artistic development. .
While Cohen has never been a very abstract poet, Death Of A Lady's Man (a sly re-titling of his album of the previous year) was perhaps his first foray into more unique poetics. The vast majority of the book, indeed, is not poetry at all (really), but a sort of very loose type of prose. Rather than being the straight up poetry that his earlier volumes mostly were, this is a collection of rants and raves, almost all of them followed by a commentary on the poem, or a type of analyzation. Highly sarcastic. Cohen seems to be analyzing the deconstruction of his former persona (the "Lady's Man") through a failed relationship with his "wife." Pretty heavy stuff. It can be difficult to penetrate at times; and, indeed, you will probably be asking yourself at times if there is any meaning to it at all. Overall, I'd have to say it's not Cohen's best book of poetry (try The Energy of Slaves for that), it is an interesting one. If you're not a fan of him already, this book certainly won't convince you. However, a fan will want it.
