The book was made into a film starring Dustin Hoffman six years later, which is one reason why – despite being far from Berger's best novel – it remains his most famous

One of Berger's least funny comic novels. That said, it gives a good insight into small town life in the 1950's ... a stifling world where the meaning of "proper behavior" was just starting to break down.
Olelifan
Wickedly tongue-in-cheek view of disintegrating relationships in small-town America.

This was fabulous. A gritty story in the depression era. Great character developments and characters. Reminds me of Elmore Leonard style. Great writer.

Only Berger could give such a great depiction of small town USA in the early 30's and it's people.

With his great ear for dialogue, Berger painted a moving picture of growing up in mid-century mid-America. I grew up knowing the grown-up versions of some of his young characters.
Fordrellador
A brilliant, darkly funny work by a master.

Not worth the read!
LOL funny! This Pulitzer nominated book of fiction starts off with a bang and keeps on going. Published in 1983, I've got to wonder if the author spent a lot of time watching The Andy Griffith Show. This is Mayberry on drugs - with the Hatfields and McCoys added just for fun. I will definitely look for more by Thomas Berger. Well done!
