Mazo de la Roche (January 15, 1879 – July 12, 1961), born Maisie Louise Roche in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, was the author of the Jalna novels, one of the most popular series of books of her time. de la Roche was the only child of William Roche, a salesman, and Alberta (Lundy) Roche, who was a great-great-niece of David Willson, founder of the Children of Peace, through the latter's elder half-brother Hugh L. Willson.

In The Building of Jalna, Adeline, an impulsive bride with an Irish temper, and her husband, Captain Whiteoak, select Lake Ontario as the site of their new home. This is book 1 of 16 in The Whiteoak Chronicles. It is followed by Morning at Jalna. Fiction Family Life Historical.

Canadian author Mazo de la Roche wrote 16 novels about Jalna, the Ontario estate of the Whiteoak family. This is the first book, but it actually starts in the middle, with three generations living. Subsequent books deal with both past and future events; this one is set in the 1920s. This is my first read by Mazo de la Roche, and is the beginning book in a series, I will definitely continue on with it. I liked reading about Philip and Adeline, how they met, what they experienced along the way, up to bringing them to Canada and building their beautiful home. The book sails along smoothly, I kept waiting for something bad to happen, that didn't happen in this book.

Fiddling Jock had finished the punch and gone back to his hut in the woods singing Loch Lomond at the top of his lungs. There was bright young moonlight. There was bright young moonlight nd there were cries of terror as the stronger seized the weaker. It was hot inside the house, for Wilmott had heaped up the logs. The two Irishmen, Philip, Adeline and Daisy, were gathered about the fire while the travellers poured out their adventures in the States. Adeline had tried to persuade Daisy to leave with the others but it had been impossible

Morning at Jalna, by Mazo de la Roche, is the second in a series of the Whiteoak family, with roots in Ireland and England, and as such, it sets the pace for what is to come. In Morning at Jalna, the family is settled in to their huge Canadian home (which is a character in itself), when they feel the effects of the American Civil War, and fear their involvement could change the family forever. The characters are so rich, and quite unpredictable--subject to quick anger and laughter, subterfuge, love, and worry, led by Adeline, the matriarch. I love family sagas, and they can't be found these days, except in the Jalna series. The author changes point of view all through the book, keeping me hopping and knowing exactly what's going through everyone's mind.

I first read this book about 30 years ago and fell in love with the Whiteoak family and their history. There are about 18 books in this series, I think. I looked forward to each one. If you enjoyed "Downton Abbey", "North and South", "Brideshead Revisited", or "Pride and Prejudice" you probably will also love the story of Jalna and the people who come to live there.

I wasn't sure that I would be able to enjoy this as my literary tastes have changed, but it's an enjoyable and comfortable read. While the drama isn't quite so shocking in the first book, I know it will develop as the story continues. I can't wait for the next installment.

A little light for my taste.

I read several of the Jalna series when I was in high school and enjoyed them greatly. This book about the founders of the estate and family did not measure up to my memories of the earlier books.

Loved this part of the story.......the beautiful new home and the children young and full of adventure. I found pioneering in such a "rich" aristocratic way quite enjoyable.
Excellent copy. Good value
