Disobedience is the debut novel by British author Naomi Alderman. Disobedience follows a rabbi's bisexual daughter as she returns from New York to her Orthodox Jewish community in Hendon, London. Although the subject matter was considered somewhat controversial, the novel was well received and earned Alderman the 2006 Orange Award for New Writers and the 2007 Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award.
Disobedience by Naomi Alderman gives Dina Rabinovitch the small-town blues. In Naomi Alderman's debut novel, Hendon is very much present; even the names of schools and shops are unchanged. It's a place where homes become synagogues: "Semi-detached houses, glued together and scooped out. I've never understood why they did that: presumably it must be cheaper than building something new," one of the characters, Ronit, muses plaintively, after returning from New York. Disobedience is the latest example of a London-inspired genre, the novel as spicy neighbourhood tell-all.
I absolutely tore through this book which usually means I enjoyed it very much. I read it in anticipation of the upcoming movie release and I am hoping the movie will have more naughty bits than the . .ook. Nice, slow burn with characters you can appreciate. The dialogue was great and everything seems totally believable until the end. The end is rushed and disappointing - I'm not sure why Alderman just suddenly quit on us like that! It's a pleasure to read a book in which I feel represented as a Jew, and once in which the characters are real.
Naomi Alderman is a Creative Writing graduate of the University of East Anglia. In her shoes, I wouldn’t brag about it, though it shows through all-too-clearly in her work. For me, the book promised much when I discovered what it was about, making my disappointment all the greater.
