The Water Is Wide" (also called "O Waly, Waly" or simply "Waly, Waly") is a folk song of Scottish origin, based on lyrics that partly date to the 1600s. Cecil Sharp published the song in Folk Songs From Somerset (1906). It is related to Child Ballad 204 (Roud number 87), Jamie Douglas, which in turn refers to the ostensibly unhappy first marriage of James Douglas, 2nd Marquis of Douglas to Lady Barbara Erskine.

The Water Is Wide is a 1972 memoir by Pat Conroy and is based on his work as a teacher on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, which is called Yamacraw Island in the book. The book is sometimes identified as nonfiction and other times identified as a novel. Yamacraw is a poor island lacking bridges and having little infrastructure

David Brettan takes his first job in a primary school in the small town of Brampton - on - Darwell. Constantly cajoled and threatened in letters from both his parents and fiancee to get a job at home, which could so easily be arranged by his fiancee's councillor father, David remains where he is, struggling to assert independence within the tight little community of staff both from his own school and the secondary modern nearby. Not so much a story of the pupils themselves, this book portrays a vivid picture of staff-room life; of the teachers whose own life is so often pitifully divorced from the lives of those they meet every day in the classroom; of tired break-time jokes and innuendoes; of the surface-deep friendship of people constantly aware of their individual standing within the hierarchy of the school, who never really get to know each other at all. Except for Lorna Beelsky, she is different, naturally aloof, an attrac- tive and glamorous woman who re- fuses to be drawn completely into this community, and it is her presence which keeps David at Brampton.
