Sheila Mitchell narrates with detachment and portrays the various characters expertly. We hear the egocentric self-pity in Martin Trent's whining voice, yet recognize its menace as well. Susan Trent's weakness and sense of hopelessness are deftly communicated.

Betweentimes, wily veteran Yorke (A Case to Answer, 2001, et. winds up the tension so slowly yet surely that even rare outbursts of good news ("Rose had not got meningitis, nor a fractured skull. Susan's bruises faded") sound ominous-until a violent windstorm uncovers a long-buried secret that will provoke one last round of violence.

I have read almost all of Margaret Yorke's books and must say that this one and her previous one were disappointing. It is true that her style is slower than other writers of the genre, but these two books were particularly slow and the plot was too obvious. I prefer her books where she keeps you guessing and then something other than the obvious occurs.

The pace in the village of Bishop St. Leon may be a bit slower, but the townsfolk have their share of dark secrets that are not as concealed as the holder would prefer. For instance, Martin Trent has returned from the continent to do what he does best physically and mentally abuse his mother Susan, who in turn tries to hide her fear and bruises though everyone can see both. Others have their own nasties to torture their soul.
Into this pleasant mix arrives enigmatic Adam Wilson, who lifts a few everyday at the pub as he gathers information about the locals. No one including his flatmate, DI Roger Morris, suspect that Adam pays full attention to what is going on around him as he learns much about the townsfolk. However, soon Adam will have what he needs to accomplish his arcane quest.
If the reader seeks non-stop action they need to go elsewhere. However, those fans of slowly simmering psychological suspense will gain much pleasure from CAUSE FOR CONCERN. The story line portrays an overall negative outlook from the villagers, as dysfunctional relationships seem everywhere. The depressing perspective turns darker as Adam aided by nature uncovers an interred secret that will send the unhealthy over the edge. Though deliberate in development, Margaret Yorke provides a cerebral look at crime that readers of a more leisurely paced thriller will enjoy.

I began reading CAUSE FOR CONCERN with sadness, because I knew that it is Margaret Yorke's last book before retiring, and she had passed away near the end of 2012. I've read almost all of the books she wrote since the mid-1980s and consider myself a devoted Yorke fan. At the same time, I do think her output has varied widely in its quality. Some books, like CRIMINAL DAMAGE and THE PRICE OF GUILT, are just great. Others are slow, predictable, or not very believable.

Sadly, CAUSE FOR CONCERN falls into this latter category. A long-suffering mother, Susan Trent, lives in the English village of Bishop St. Leon. Everybody knows that her middle-aged son, Martin, abuses her; and many fear that he'll kill her some day. But Susan refuses to acknowledge the problem (for reasons that become clear later in the book), so there's nothing anybody can do to help her. Meanwhile, a mysterious stranger shows up in the village and begins investigating the Trent family. He's thoroughly likable and well-adjusted, which eliminates any suspense because he's clearly not a threat.

Yorke is always readable, and this book is no exception, but I really felt the book had very limited narrative drive. It all proceeds at a leisurely pace. And if you know Margaret's tricks (and even if you don't), the turn of events in the last couple of chapters is predictable. Plus there's just something lacking here... Yorke has never been a great stylist, but the book reads almost like a police report rather than a novel. Yorke has a tendency to tell rather than show, and that's absolutely the case here. So, while I am glad I read the book and thank Yorke for all the terrific reads over the decades, I must say this is not her best work, and anyone who wants to give Yorke a try is better off starting with one of the great books published by Mysterious Press in the 1990s.

Margaret Yorke often writes of the aftermath of crime. Here, an old crime, and a new one, consume several families. The characters are well drawn, familiar, and many will recognize these situations that often turn tragic. Most poignantly, an indulgent parent, who later is at the mercy of a tyrant that she helped create.
