For all of the characters in Elizabeth Spencer’s gracefully written novel, the salt line divides past and present, memory and longing, tranquillity and danger. Crossing it places everyone in the chaotic path of Arnie Carrington, former professor and 1960s campus radical, who is on a crusade to restore the small Gulf Coast town of Notchaki after the devastation of Hurricane Camille.

I have got to say this Pocket slice of Proper Etiquette is a delightful read...Its tiny enough and light enough to take anywhere. If you didn't know how place settings go or proper eating techniques with varying company at the dinner table..This book is for you!!!I have the huge Etiquette book written by I believe Peggy Post one of the descendants of Emily..So I can say hands down if you're looking for a bit of class in an easily read book this one is for you!

I am very happy with the book. I ordered it for a friend of mine who requested I help her with her
etiquette.

I am familiar with the MS Gulf Coast and with hurricanes; I remember Hurricane Camille. It is especially interesting to read this book, as I did, in the post-Katrina era.

There are many elements at play in this book which makes it rather complex and interesting. I loved reading about Arnie's island and would have liked the book better if there had been more island action. Arnie's salvaged goods were also great to read about; yes people really do salvage all sorts of things after hurricanes.

I found some parts of the book confusing. Times and places are sometimes not clearly defined. Paragraphs in which more than one person speaks do not make for easy reading.

With the possible exception of the character Yates, I did not like any of these characters. I would have enjoyed the book more if someone was likeable. While I think Mavis was written to be sympathetic, I did not find her to be so.

Hurricanes do strange things to people but these characters did not need a hurricane to set them in motion.

This book contains some VERY useful information. Most of the suggestions it gives for handling certain situations are impeccable;however, some of them are questionable, i.e. what to do with food taken from your mouth during dinner. Otherwise this book is the bible of the up and coming socialite, and a good refresher for the seasoned.
