Tall, slender Violet Mathers is growing up in the Great Depression, which could just as well define her state of mind. Abandoned by her mother as a child, mistreated by her father, and teased by her schoolmates (Hey, Olive Oyl, wheres Popeye?), the lonely girl finds solace in artistic pursuits

This is just what elderly Violet Mathers does. She begins this book telling readers how she goes to a diner just to get back to the days when she was young and acting as the manager of the Pearltones, a music group touring the midwest and south. Groupies followed the musicians, this group was known as the Clamshells and followed the Pearltones as much as they could. The time is the 1930s. Kjel, a Norwegian name, is pronounced Shell.

Violet, from Kentucky, when she was sixteen, has given up on life. An abused child, her mother left when she was six, ran off with another man. Her father, a drunk, but good mechanic, beat his daughter poked fun of her, called her all kinds of names as did his relatives, friends and Violet's peer. Her father hated her. She felt worthless. When she was working in a factory, she liked her job, she had a horrible accident. A machine torn off her arm and possibly torn away her dreams. She is a wonderful designer and loves working with fabrics, so very talented. But with just one arm. No way.

When she was eighteen she hops on a bus to go to California to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge. But fate steps in. The bus breaks down in North Dakota. The passengers stay in different homes, Violet stays with Kjel's parents. What wonderful parents did he have. He is so lucky. And she met Kjel and his best friend, Austin. Kjel asks her to manage their music group. Austin's brother Dallas joins. The brothers are wonderful with their guitars. Kjel is so handsome that the girls and ladies all fall in love with him as does Violet who gets jealous of all the girls swarming after him. Kjel is the only man who ever paid this girl attention. The two are just friends, Violet wants more. The brothers are black, the band is mixed, dangerous and unusual for those times.

Violet begins each chapter in the present, then goes back in time when she is so happy, eating at diners, fixing picnic lunches, sleeping under the stars, meeting characters who are in entertainment, music plays a large part in this book, music could be another character. Characters who follow the group, the group is so popular that clubs, bars and other venues are wanting to book these popular musicians. They attract crowds. They get better and better. Many high up characters in music want to get to know them, make records with them, put them on radio.

As she looks over her life, Violet is happy she didn't do what she intended. She marries, has a daughter, than a grandson, a wonderful family. Wonderful to be alive, she loves her life. And to have so many friends who she loves and who love her. And all the characters she met during her travels. She does follow her dream to become a businesswoman, to design and make clothes, and becomes well known for her clothes. Her clothes are popular, desirable, characters love them, buy from her factory... A woman from Kentucky, not pretty, too tall, with only one arm. And this is how her life goes.

Violet Mathers was a tall, awkward 13 year old, with a chin too big for her face. All her life she had been told she was ugly, and she believed it. Abandoned by her mother when she was six, her father showed her no affection, but abused her verbally and beat her regularly. Her only joy was found in designing and sewing clothes she made from old tablecloths and scraps she obtained from the local church bazaar. Robbed of her ability to sew and design, she lost her arm in a factory accident at the age of 16. Told by her father that she was useless, she decides to run away from home at age 18. She hops on a bus and heads for San Francisco where she plans to end her life by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. Fate steps in however, when the bus is involved in an accident and she is rescued by a young man named Kjel Hedstrom and his Negro friend, Austin.

That chance meeting changes her life forever, as Violet sets out on a whirlwind adventure with her new found friends. Ultimately she finds that she can love and be loved by learning to accept and love herself. It is a poignant story filled with hope, joy, and sadness, but a worthwhile read.

I loved this book. I ignored holiday chores to read it, which I've paid for dearly.

A compelling story that is well written, and each chapter leaves you hoping you have time to read the next.

Even the unlikable character who shows up later in the book is understandable.

For me, this is a story of a combination of determination and being in the right place at the right time, intense joy and extreme sadness. I loved the language (and the correct grammar, which is very important to me).

If you enjoy family/human drama, you will enjoy this story.

Lorna Landvik excels with this masterful tale of Violet Mathers, an ugly duckling, deserted by her mother, beaten by her father, and just to make sure she has more than her share of misery, a horrible accident that causes the loss of her arm. But an amazing thing happens to Violet on her way to commit suicide. Violet's life has taught her that when things look as bleak as can be, they can still get bleaker. And her bus ride to San Francisco for the express purpose of jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge proves that point. How she winds up on a farm in North Dakota, how she meets the man she will love forever but who can never love her in the way she needs him to, how lemons truly become lemonade is about the most uplifting, heart-wrenching story I've had the pleasure of reading.

Her dreams of being a fashion designer may have died with the loss of her arm, but a life she never envisioned rises up to meet her. Through a series of circumstances Violet could never have dreamed, she finds herself traveling through the United States as a band manager during the Great Depression. Twenty years before Elvis, a beautiful and charismatic man named Kjel Hedstrom had young girls swooning and grown men wanting to join the band. His relationship with Violet, the other band members he brings into her life, and the unforgettable adventures of the Pearltones will keep you mesmerized. Be forewarned that this book will not end as you expect, and perhaps not as you would have wished, but end it does and don't be surprised if your tears of sorrow and joy have stained the pages.

I absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down. It really covers all the emotions. I really came to care about the characters as if they were real people. One of my favorite books I read in 2015. I would suggest that if you like this book you might also enjoy Maude by Donna Foley Mabry , the true story about her Grandmother which starts in 1906 until the late 1960's.

A wonderful book full of excitement and very interesting characters. It is so full of interesting characters and occurrences. There are wonderful things happening and unhappy things, so it keeps you wondering from page to page. You will thoroughly enjoy reading this book.
