Yet another of George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman Papers I enjoyed

Yet another of George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman Papers I enjoyed. I approached this one with a little trepidation, having read less-than-glowing recommendations and having been forewarned about the extensive Cricket content (me being an American with very little knowledge of the sport). However, I found it to be much better than expected and I did learn a lot about Cricket through this book. I admit there were times when I felt Fraser could have wrapped up Flashman's Lady sooner to good effect. But, I realize there is a backdrop of actual history the Flashman tales float upon.

George MacDonald Fraser served in a Highland regiment in India and the Middle East, worked on newspapers in Britain and Canada, and has written nine other Flashman novels and numerous films, most notably The Three Musketeers, The Four Musketeers, and the James Bond film.

I admit there were times when I felt Fraser could have wrapped up Flashman's Lady sooner to good effect. But, I realize there is a backdrop of actual history the Flashman tales float upon. So, I can see that the twists and turns in the story-line are not always the author's choice to make.

There an overwhelming saving grace in this one, though. It's hilarious! Be warned, however, Fraser's is a dry wit. So, I imagine it would be easy to miss some of the humor (or humour as Harry would write) if you're entirely focused on the story line and perhaps taking it a little too literally. Case in point - and I'll try not to reveal too much of a spoiler - Elspeth's diary entries appear to disprove certain of Flashman's opinions of her while confirming others, with both producing true laugh-out-loud moments for me. This alone was worth the read. But, of course, there's so much more history and adventure that even without the comic moments I would still have been captivated.

Bottom line: Flashman's Lady is not as far off the mark as some would lead you to believe!

This addition to the Flashman series isn't as good as other volumes. It's still good enough for us Flashman fans not to miss it, but it probably won't be your favorite one. Since Elspeth (Mrs. Flashman) is generally an amusing character, I expected this book, which feature her a lot, would be a lot of fun, but it was a disappointment. First of all, there is too much about cricket at the beginning. Maybe a cricket fan would understand and enjoy all the references to great cricketers, but it was too much for me. Then Flashman and Elspeth end up in pirate's hands, but it's not very dramatic, and the pirate is a bit of a wuss--not very pirate-like. In the final part of the book, Flashman ends up a sex slave in Madagascar, which wasn't as interesting as I just made it sound. The book lacks clever plot twists and excitingly devious characters that are found in other Flashman books. This won't deter me from reading other Flashman books. Every chain has its weak link.

Sir Harry Paget Flashman the adventuresome British soldier returns to action in "Flashman's Lady." The thrilling novel is the sixth in the popular series penned by G.M. Fraser.
the Plot:
Part One-The action takes place on the cricket field at Lord's and other posh London venues for the British sport. Harry Flashman plays a one man game against Soloman Haslam. Haslam has been toying with the affections of Elspeth the blonde beauty who is married to Flashman. Both Flashy and Elspeth are serial adulterers! Flash is jealous of Solomon! Harry loses a bet with Haslam which result in he, his wife Elspeth and his father in law (whom Flashman detests) to journey to Singapore where Haslam has a large estate. Their time spent on Haslam's lavish estate is described in detail with Fraser's pen describing the exotic sights and sounds of Malaysia.
Part Two-Flashman is hit on the head and wakes up learning that Elspeth has been kidnapped by pirates. Haslam turns out to be a Muslim pirate who is in love with Elspeth. Haslam flees with Mrs. Flashman. Harry joins forces with Harry Brooke a British born aristocrat. Brooke, Flashman and a troop of soldiers seek to find Elspeth and defeat the Borneo pirates. Scenes in the jungles of Borneo are vividly described. Elspeth is rescued.
Part II-Harry is taken prisoner on the island of Madagascar becoming a slave. he is forced to become the male toy boy of the wicked queen of the island. We learn of various tortures the horrible queen inflicts on both her enemies and subject. Harry and Elspeth (who being held captive ) manage to escape after a dangerous flight to the coast. The Flashmans are rescued by British and French naval personnel. The battle scenes are bloody and realistic.
The novel is narrated in the first person by Flashman as in the other books in the series. However, in this novel we also are privy to the thoughts of Elspeth as we are allowed to read her diary. Elspeth is much more prim and proper than is Harry!
I was unable to understand the pages devoted to the esoteric English game of cricket being a benighted American. Fraser delights in using slang when describing parts of the female anatomy. Some readers will find his use of the "N" word to be offensive.
This is a good light novel of adventure managing to convey a good deal of information about life in 1844-45 during the Victorian era. If you read one of the Flashman novels you will become "hooked." An excellent series on the nineteenth century version of James Bond 007!
