The novella "Something Out There" (included here with other stories) is a really great place to begin a journey into the works of one of the 20th century's best writers in English, South African Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer

The novella "Something Out There" (included here with other stories) is a really great place to begin a journey into the works of one of the 20th century's best writers in English, South African Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer. The story is set in apartheid South Africa with Mandela still in prison and his ANC still banned, but the novella is about more than the politics of Gordimer's time and place. The characters here-particularly the girl, Joy-and the complexity of the relationships between white characters and black characters will long stay with you.

Something Out There book. Absolutely brilliant. South African writer Nadine Gordimer collects some short stories here and a long novella in the back that I admit I haven't read ye. .She tosses off epiphanies, sometimes several to a page, and I am astonished as to how much humanity she can fit into such short stories.

Nadine Gordimer (20 November 1923 – 13 July 2014) was a South African writer, political activist and recipient of the 1991 Nobel Prize in Literature. She was recognized as a woman "who through her magnificent epic writing has – in the words of Alfred Nobel – been of very great benefit to humanity". Gordimer's writing dealt with moral and racial issues, particularly apartheid in South Africa. Under that regime, works such as Burger's Daughter and July's People were banned.

Express Something Out There.

Written by Nadine Gordimer in 1984, Something Out There is a collection of 9 short stories and one novella. Most of the short stories are set in Africa, but one is a letter response of Hermann Kafka, to his son's letter. Gordimer is a good author, and this is a nice sampling. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Set in depression-era America, Steinbeck's novel deals with some of the same things as Something Out There

A collection of nine stories and one novella explore the secret and collusive codes by which people live together

The characters here--particularly the girl, Joy--and the complexity of the relationships between white characters and black characters will long stay with you. Gordimer can sometimes be a pretty dense read (and in works like "The Conservationist" and "Burger's Daughter," among others, the work she requires of the reader is well worth it). But "Something Out There" is an accessible, engaging read for any smart reader or for any students and teachers seeking to understand history from the inside. Highly recommended.

I had to read this for class. Good read is as much as I can say for a book i had to read for class. It deals with racial tension in apartheid S.A. I think this is mindful to rad and thought provoking a good read. Here is an excerpt:
The Rossers are not, however, the ordinary young newlyweds they appear to be. Unknown to the Kloppers, and to the rest of the white community, the couple (they are not married, nor are they any longer lovers) have rented the Kleynhans place as a base from which to plan a revolutionary operation against the government. With the help of Vusi and Eddie, black revolutionaries posing as farm laborers, they set about transforming an abandoned shed into an ammunition warehouse and making other preparations for their strike. All four of them are careful to maintain appearances, observing by day the traditional social conventions between white masters and their

gives a bit of mystery as you find out the couple are just posing as such. Will they succeed read and find out

There probably is nothing the captures the mood of the South African crisis in the 1980s better than "Something Out There." Gordimer creates cross-cutting characters and situations against the backdrop of a tough political and social climate. The problem with the work now, however, is that few would have any incentive to read it as it serves better as historical fiction than anything applicable to the modern day given the changes in the country.
