The novella "Something Out There" (included here with other stories) is a really great place to begin a journey into the works of one of the 20th century's best writers in English, South African Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer. The story is set in apartheid South Africa with Mandela still in prison and his ANC still banned, but the novella is about more than the politics of Gordimer's time and place. The characters here-particularly the girl, Joy-and the complexity of the relationships between white characters and black characters will long stay with you.
Something Out There book. Absolutely brilliant. South African writer Nadine Gordimer collects some short stories here and a long novella in the back that I admit I haven't read ye. .She tosses off epiphanies, sometimes several to a page, and I am astonished as to how much humanity she can fit into such short stories.

Nadine Gordimer (20 November 1923 – 13 July 2014) was a South African writer, political activist and recipient of the 1991 Nobel Prize in Literature. She was recognized as a woman "who through her magnificent epic writing has – in the words of Alfred Nobel – been of very great benefit to humanity". Gordimer's writing dealt with moral and racial issues, particularly apartheid in South Africa. Under that regime, works such as Burger's Daughter and July's People were banned.

Do look!’ ‘Exactly like something out of Somerset Maugham!’ said Mrs Turgell, turning to me with that mixture of gaiety and appeal - you felt she so fervently wanted you to experience what she was experiencing that, however romantic and idiotic it might be, she was irresistible.
Express Something Out There.
Written by Nadine Gordimer in 1984, Something Out There is a collection of 9 short stories and one novella. Most of the short stories are set in Africa, but one is a letter response of Hermann Kafka, to his son's letter. Gordimer is a good author, and this is a nice sampling. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Set in depression-era America, Steinbeck's novel deals with some of the same things as Something Out There
