John Yates Beall (January 1, 1835 – February 24, 1865) was a Confederate privateer in the American Civil War who was arrested as a spy in New York and executed at Fort Columbus, Governors Island, New York. He was born in Jefferson County, Virginia-now West Virginia-on his father's farm, Walnut Grove. He attended the University of Virginia to study law but upon the death of his father in 1855 he left his studies to take up farming.

The American Civil War (also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States from 1861 to 1865, fought between the northern United States (loyal to the Union) and the southern United States (that had seceded from the Union and formed the Confederacy). The civil war began primarily as a result of the long-standing controversy over the enslavement of black people.

John William Headley was a young man from western Kentucky who went to war in 1861, serving first in then Lt. Col. Nathan Bedford Forrest's cavalry battalion, but later riding with John Hunt Morgan's famous cavalry. After the war, he married a woman who had been a daring Confederate agent herself, and went into the tobacco business in Evansville, Indiana. He served as Kentucky's Secretary of State from 1891 to 1894, but in the early 1900s he moved his family to California. John Headley died in Beverly Hills in 1930, an "unreconstructed" Rebel to the end.

Quendant
This 1906 memoir about Confederate secret agents has been a perennial source text for many popular and investigative histories (Clint Johnson's 'A Vast and Fiendish Plot' is a recent example). It is available for free via online archives, and I would recommend spending a little time with a free version before plunking down the electronic cash for this Kindle edition. The photographs in this 'Special Illustrated Edition' are not particularly rare or enthralling. They are not worth the price of the Kindle e-book. On the other hand, this Kindle edition is slightly more readable, in layout and typography, than the scanned page images you will get with the free edition.

As it's a personal memoir, it's history full of holes, with a clutter of subjective detail but not much in the way of historical perspective. Wherever he imagined he was going with the Confederate cavalry and intelligence operations, young John Headley could never see beyond the end of his nose. On the other hand the book preserves, like an ancient jar of pungent ointment, the scent and feel of what it was like to be caught up in the doomed, half-baked spy schemes of the CSA. Most of the CSA's stateside operations were like some daft spy network run by Admiral Canaris in WW2, cloak-and-dagger stuff done purely for show. The operatives had been well and thoroughly penetrated by the other side.
