Lorine Niedecker was born in Fort Atkinson, in southern Wisconsin, and lived in the area for most of her life.
Lorine Niedecker was born in Fort Atkinson, in southern Wisconsin, and lived in the area for most of her life. Her father was a business man who owned property on Blackhawk Island, a peninsula on the Rock River. Niedecker attended two years of college at Beloit College but was forced to return home due to her father's struggling carp-seining business and her mother's increasing poor health.
Niedecker's earliest poetry was marked by her reading of the Imagists, whose work she greatly admired and of surrealism

Encouraged by this interest, Niedecker started writing again. Jargon Society, Inland Book Company, 1985. She had previously earned her living scrubbing hospital floors, "reading proof" at a local magazine, and renting cottages, and had lived at the edge of poverty for years. However, her marriage in 1963 to Al Millen brought financial stability back into her life.
