In a concise, intelligent discussion, Zumthor examines medieval studies and medievalism and the difficulties both face in modern academics

In a concise, intelligent discussion, Zumthor examines medieval studies and medievalism and the difficulties both face in modern academics. While occasionally dense and verbose, Zumthor provides incisive criticism of the way medieval studies are conducted, how we've gotten stuck on 19th-century ideas of criticism, and how we might move forward from the Romantics. He was Swiss-born, from Geneva. He studied in Paris with Gustave Cohen, and worked on French etymology with Walther von Wartburg. In studying medieval French poetry, he formulated the concept of mouvance (variability).

It is a collection of essays, each on a different misconception about medieval times written by experts in those particular fields. They are interesting, entertaining, and very readable, nothing to be afraid of if you like history, but hate dry, dreary tomes on the subject. It is organized around five basic areas: The Church, (as one writer says, everyone then was either a Christian or a Pagan), Knights, Science, The Arts, and Society.

Inventing the middle ages. The Lives, Works, and Ideas of the Great Medievalists of the Twentieth Century. In this ground-breaking work, Norman Cantor explains how our current notion of the Middle Ages-with its vivid images of wars, tournaments, plagues, saints and kings, knights and ladies-was born in the twentieth century. A revolution in academic method, this book is a breakthrough to a new way of teaching the humanities and historiography, to be enjoyed by student and general public alike.
