Great Expectations, novel by Charles Dickens, first published serially in 1860–61 and issued in book form in 1861. The classic novel was one of its author’s greatest critical and popular successes. It chronicles the coming of age of the orphan Pip while also addressing such issues as social class and human worth. Great Expectations is the thirteenth novel by Charles Dickens and his penultimate completed novel, that depicts the education of an orphan nicknamed Pip (a bildungsroman). It is Dickens's second novel, after David Copperfield, to be fully narrated in the first person. The novel was first published as a serial in Dickens's weekly periodical All the Year Round, from 1 December 1860 to August 1861. In October 1861, Chapman and Hall published the novel in three volumes.

In Great Expectations, Charles Dickens introduces the reader to many intriguing and memorable characters, including the eccentric recluse, Miss Havisham, the shrewd and careful lawyer, Mr. Jaggers. Jaggers, and the benevolent convict, Abel Magwitch. However, without a doubt, Great Expectations is the story of Pip and his initial dreams and resulting disappointments that eventually lead to him becoming a genuinely good man.
