George Jean Nathan (1882-1958) was the leading American drama critic of his time. Connolly Suffolk University. Nathan wrote during the most important period of our theatre's history and set critical standards that are still being followed. My own book, George Jean Nathan and the Making of Modern American Drama Criticism (2000), which contains a bibliography, is the only study of Nathan's entire career.

He has published numerous articles in journals and contributed to reference books such as The Cambridge Guide to American Theatre, The Continuum Companion to Twentieth-Century Theatre, The Oxford Encyclopedia of Theatre and Performance and The Encyclopedia of New England Culture. He is also Visiting Professor at the Institute of English Philology at the University of Ostrava in the Czech Republic.

George Jean Nathan was the first modern American drama critic, the man who created the twentieth-centruy image of the profession. This study is based on research drawn from Nathan's and H. L. Mencken's papers, other archival sources, interviews, and correspondence. It is primarily a study of Nathan's criticism, but there is also material on Nathan's life, other critics, writers Nathan knew and worked with, the world of newspapers and magazines, New York theater, press agents, night clubs, and columnists. There is no other figure that could bring together the world of Broadway and literary culture like this, because there was no one else like George Jean Nathan.
