I find Nancy Atherton’s Aunt Dimity books wholly charming. This one did not disappoint. I enjoyed learning more personal history of the residents of Finch. Her previous volume, in a gothic mansion that achieves suspense notably rare for the cozy genre, was the best. This one was weaker than an earlier Finch-based mystery. I often declare merely tromping through pages with these beloved characters is pleasurable.

Let Nancy Atherton and Aunt Dimity remind you of the reason you got hooked on books in the first place. I promise you will be scouring bookstores for more of the series after you give it a taste. However, the reader, Teri Clark Linden, was so incredibly stilted and robotic that I finished off that novel through the paperback format of Introducing Aunt Dimity, Paranormal Detective.

Nancy Atherton is an American writer and author of the Aunt Dimity mystery novel series, which presently extends to twenty-one volumes. Atherton lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The series follows the adventures of American Lori Shepherd and her growing family as she resolves mysteries with the help of her deceased benefactor, Aunt Dimity, who communicates with her from the spirit world by means of a blue leather-bound writing journal

Mr. Wetherhead was shaking so badly that I feared his legs would give way beneath him. I shot a reproachful glance at Nicholas and took the little man gently by the elbow.

Mr. Come on, George, I said,. guiding him toward the kitchen. I’ll put the kettle o. .Mr. Wetherhead wasn’t the only one shaken by Nicholas’s performance. I was as rattled as the lemon bars. The browbeating bully who’d surfaced in the memorabilia room bore little resemblance to the soft-spoken, kindly man who’d wrapped a blanket around my shoulders in the vicar’s study.

She lives next door to a cornfield in central Illinois. Chapter 8. The luncheon was more enjoyable than anyone could have anticipated. Lilian made sure that our conversation centered on my recent visit to the States-anything to divert her husband’s attention from local events-while Nicholas and I attempted to polish off the roast beef, new potatoes, fresh asparagus, and assorted side dishes that Lilian had so lovingly prepared.

Maybe I should explain. When I was a little girl, my mother used to tell me stories. She would tuck me in, sit Reginald in her lap, and spin tale after tale until my eyelids drooped and I nodded off to sleep.

Wonderful book - one of my favorites in the series. However - this is the audiobook. Let me make that clear and say it again. This review is for the audiobook and the reader is terrible. She sounds like a robotic 1st grader, enunciating every consonant and vowel with excruciating care. I love this book but had to turn off the audiobook it is so annoying. And I had ordered two other audiobooks that had the same reader. I returned them unopened. The first Aunt Dimity book, Aunt Dimity's Death, came on an audio cassette by a marvelous reader, as did only one other, Aunt Dimity Beats the Devil. If you can find either of those, it's worth it to listen to the audio cassette or record the cassette digitally. I have both of them. Obviously Nancy Atherton had no choice in the selection of the reader or she would never have let her wonderful stories be read in such a story- destroying manner. Please just buy the book. Or the Kindle book.

What a charming book! Lori Shepherd learned that a woman she thought of as a fictional character was real, had passed away, and had left her a cottage in England. She only knew that "Aunt Dimity" was the supposed author of stories her mother had told her when she was a little girl. Her mother had also passed away and Lori felt very alone in the world, and guilty because she had not been at her mother's side when she died. Her aunt's attorney tracked her down and informed her of her inheritance and she has a chance to solve the mystery of her mother and Aunt Dimity's friendship through the years. This story is very well written, and I loved the development of a romance between the two main characters. I think this is a book I may read again, and I very, very seldom do that.

This was an interesting mystery - there is no death, well, not a death to be "solved" anyway. There was a death in the beginning, but that actually just spurs the main character into making a journey. The journey is one of self-discovery, healing, and romance.

It also has a bit of a paranormal element to it, so for those of you who don't like that sort of thing, this book wouldn't be for you.

I didn't hate the book, but I did slog through it. It actually took me about two months to read. I kept putting it down and picking up other books, which I'd then finish and think "Oh, I have to get back to Aunt Dimity."

The main character was kind of irritating, but I think I see why the author made her that way. She did become more likeable as the book went on, but still, I have to say I wasn't rooting for her. If anything, I was rooting for Bill - her lawyer-slash-travel companion-slash-romantic interest.

Although honestly, I kind of thought he was too good for her.

So - this book is a much different kind of cozy, and in some ways that made it an enjoyable read and in others not so much. It wasn't a book I felt a need to finish quickly - I wasn't invested in seeing the outcome. Still, I did keep with it until the end and didn't give up on it.

I've come to the point in my life that my motto is: "Life is too short to read bad books." If I pick up a book that I really don't like, I have no problem anymore in putting it in my thrift shop pile and moving on.

One reason I might have kept on with this one is that it was a Kindle read - so if I found myself in a waiting room or somewhere else where I had both time on my hands and my Fire tablet with me, I would go back to reading this story.

It wasn't a must-read for me, but your mileage may be different.

I greatly enjoyed this book for the reasons I usually enjoy the books I read, particularly characters that are fleshed out, likeable, and unique, and a plot that engages me.. What made this particular book special in the series was how the Duke solved the problems that afflicted his community - so incredible imaginative and bold. One particular characteristic desplayed by more than one character was courage - and the willingness to dare greatly. I also loved the loyalty and connectedness these characters displayed.

This is the first book in what has become a very pleasing and fun cozy series. Unfortunately I did not read these books in order but I really do not feel that this has lessoned my reading enjoyment one bit. The author, Nancy Etherton is a good teller of stories and a good writer and actually each of the novels in this series can be read as stand alones because the author does a nice job of filling in past details as she writes each book. It should also be noted that if you like your mysteries loaded with dead bodies, then you probably should look elsewhere.

In this first tale we find how Lori, a young lady who is down on her luck, discovers that she has inherited her own English cottage near a quant English village and has become the heiress of a not so small fortune. She also meets a young and successful lawyer, moves to England, discovers the cottage she lives in is somewhat haunted and actually meets (sort of) Aunt Dimity, a lady who she always thought was a figment of her recently deceased mother's imagination.

The writing of this story is smooth and easy reading and the novel moves long at a good clip. Characters are rather realistic and believable and in this first book we meet with some of them that will inhabit all the author's future novels in this series.

All in all, if you are into the cozy mystery genre this one is a good choice. We have of course the mystery, a dab of the paranormal and a nice little romance all going at the same time and all skillfully blended to create a very cozy read.

This was a library find.

I've read several aunt Comity books and enjoyed them. Each had a mystery to be solved, but the people in the story were more important and yet all questions were answered in the end. It was lovely to read about how it all began -- to get to know Lori, her mother and Dimity better and witness the beginning of Lori and Bill's life together. Aunt Dimity stories were cozy before cozy was a genre. Ms. Atherton's books are always a treat and this one is a true delight.
