You need to be very careful about which reference book you take to heart.

I'm not saying that this is a bad book but some of the pop culture imagery and certain other aspects of this book might be misleading.

For example the book Vampires: The Occult Truth tends to slant everything to make it look like psychic vampires are a universal truth.

In this day and age inaccurate histories find their way into book store shelves all the time.

There is a horrible book out there called "The Man who wrote Frankenstein." This offensive thing (though not about folklore) pretty much says a woman like Mary Shelley would be too stupid to have written Frankenstein. It also uses the parts where the creature quotes Paradise Lost as proof that it was Percy Shelley who wrote it and not Mary Shelley. Sometimes authors see what they want to see.

Now with the yee naaldlooshii (The Skinwalker) which was mentioned in this book, it was considered particularly nasty and evil. Most Navajo won't even talk about it with outsides, especially after dark. Essentially it was a terrible boogie man. Also these things could take multiple forms, not just a wolf or coyote. They could also be crows or owls or sometimes even other humans by taking their skin or devouring them.

Something to consider is that today we can easily see comparisons with the yee naaldlooshii and even the Nordic Fenrir and werewolves but a certain thing to remember is werewolves in actual folklore were rarely (if ever) bipedal. That idea got popularized by The Wolfman movie in 1941.

In most German and French lore the Loup Garou (French for werewolf) usually looked like actual wolves until you killed them. And often the human deliberately took the wolf form and retained their human mind while doing evil. This belief lead to a lot of "werewolf burnings" in the Auvergne of France in the fifteenth and sixteenth century.

In the Greek myth of King Lycaon (where we get the words lycanthrope, lycanthropy, and the more modern Lycan) it was believed that King Lycaon served human flesh at a feast. Zeus was so disgusted by this that he turned Lycaon into a wolf. Only his eyes remained human. Eventually Lycaon could return back to human form but while in human form his eyes were that of a wolf. This made him not quite of one world or the other. It is believed that he was able to transmit this condition to others and had followers, which lead to the early belief in werewolves in Ancient Greece. The story was recorded by Ovid.

Sometimes even historians and authors have a bias because they feel they have found something that affirms a view they already had. You can imagine how some archeologists winced when The Discovery channel put out an article about "Ancient Zombies" when bodies were found in Bolivia and later Ireland, dating back five hundred years, with bricks in their mouths (to prevent biting) and long stakes in the chests. ...Umm just because vampires are falling out of fashion and zombies were kind of trendy / still kind of are, does not make those things zombies. In fact the word Zombie comes from Haiti, roughly two hundred years ago, which hadn't even been invaded yet by Europeans. And Haitian zombies were not exactly decomposing, nor did they shuffle along craving brains and spread zombism via a bite. They were usually the victim of a witch doctor who poisoned someone with blow fish poison to paralyze them and make them seem dead. Then the witch doctor would dig them up and convinced them that they had been dead and would return to being dead if they didn't serve them as a slave. Supposedly these sort of zombies could be cured with salt.

It wasn't until the movie The Last man on Earth (ironically based on the vampire novel "I am Legend" which contained intelligent vampires...) which would inspire Night of the Living dead, that people started to see zombies as we now do in the modern context of rotting / shuffling corpse that will turn you into one too.

Sometimes even good intentioned media can and does get things wrong, sometimes it's just that the author wants to confirm something they already believed or they want people who are interested in the pop culture versions of these creatures to read their work. So you need to be careful and determine where and when to question the research.

My favorite books on werewolves are The Werewolf Encyclopedia: A field guide to shapeshifting beings, Werewolves by Daniel Cohen (author of Real Vampires and has appeared on The History Channel's History's Mysteries: Werewolves), and my personal favorite Werewolves by Dr. Bob Curran, who has become my favorite author in regard to foklore and the occult.

Very good encyclopedia of werewolves. Lists werewolf legends, atributes, and modern stories such as movies, books, and music. I loved it, it made a perfect addition to my metaphysical/wiccan/new age book collection.
