BABES IN TINSELTOWN A Mystery of Hollywood’s Golden Age Sheri Cobb South Chapter 1 Strangers on a Train (1951) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock Starring Robert Walker, Farley. To Mama, Hollywood was only one step removed from Sodom and Gomorrah. All that smoking and drinking, she’d fretted when told of her daughter’s ambitions, to say nothing of the s-e-x. This last was said with a furtive glance at her husband, as if the Honorable Hubert Foster might hand down Solomonic wisdom from the judge’s bench, yet be wholly ignorant of how his three daughters had been conceived.

Filmmakers’ infatuation with Hollywood was not reciprocated at first. Most of Hollywood’s population consisted of farmers who didn’t want anything to do with show business, which, even back then, had a reputation for debauchery.

Filmmakers’ infatuation with Hollywood was not reciprocated at first. Boardinghouses and apartment buildings soon started displaying signs that read No Dogs Or Actors Allowed. Another section of Hollywood’s population consisted of businessmen such as land developers and oil tycoons. They also weren’t interested in dealings with film studios because they considered the movie colonization of Hollywood a passing fad.

Frankie Foster is the sheltered daughter of a proper Southern lady and a prominent judge, but she really wants to be a movie star. In spite of her family’s misgivings, she boards a train and heads for Hollywood in search of fame and fortune. Frankie eventually finds work at Monumental Pictures as an extra in a swashbuckling costume picture. Unfortunately, her career threatens to be short-lived when producer Arthur Cohen staggers onto the soundstage in an apparent drunken rage and drops dead at her feet. The police dismiss the death as a heart attack, but then, they don’t know about the quarrel Frankie heard between the producer and his brother/partner. With filming suspended indefinitely, Frankie must discover the truth if she is to save the picture and her fledgling career. "Sheri Cobb South has a witty and refreshingly original voice. What a wonderful plot to seize upon. I am a big fan of classic movies, but was disappointed in this book. It felt more like Nancy Drew than Babes in Tinseltown. The author just never fully delivered on the potential of the title. It made me want to sit down and do a re-write on the bones of what could have been an interesting series of mysteries.

A different book from her Regency Period books, which are my absolute favorites, but a good Mystery Read.

Terrific! Loads of fun and terrific escape into another period of time.

In this story we watch Frankie arrive in 1930's Hollywood, with all her innocence and dreams of a future in Hollywood. She copes as she is flung into the chaos and reality of movie acting while still keeping a roof over her head. With the help of her hunky self appointed "body guard" Mitch, she attempts to prove that the death of an infamous movie producer was in fact murder. This is a very pleasant step back in time for a few hours. Grab a cup of tea and start reading.

If you are a fan of the 30’s and 40’s black and white movies (like myself) I bet you too will get a kick out of this book. It is like those movies where you have to accept the outrageous plots and just go with the fun. (Think screwball comedies detective edition.) Each chapter lists a movie from the period and I have seen them all, thanks to Turner Classic Movie channel. It was a quick read and easily visualized. It was fun and I enjoyed it very much.

I have been a fan of Sheri South's Regency romances and mysteries for a long time--her sparkling dialogue, strong characterizations, witty prose, and knack for telling a "different" kind of story keep me coming back. Now she's produced something REALLY different: a mystery series set during the height of the Hollywood Golden Age. Meet innocent but shrewd Southern belle Frankie Foster and her cast of kooky, hunky, and evil side-kicks for a rousing, entertaining visit to the 1930's, where the murder of a big-time movie director must be solved before our heroine can earn her ticket to stardom. A more serious subplot involving a burgeoning underworld drug culture in Tinseltown lends weight to what is otherwise a concoction as sweet and delicious as Georgia peach cobbler.

Enjoy!

The Golden Age of Hollywood surrounds the life off a naive young girl fresh of the train from Georgia with all the hopes and dreams of becoming a movie star. We get a picture of what life might have been like back then as we watch her and her cohorts survive their daily trials and tribulations, all the while trying to solve the recent murder of a infamous movie producer. Romance and adventure abound in this genteel tale of past times. Enjoy!!
