Woodman, Richard, 1944-.

I understood my brother to be living under a nom de guerre. Oh, it isn’t common knowledge, Captain Drinkwater; you need have no fear that more than a few men know about it. e, and Prince Vorontzoff, your brother’s employer and a man sympathetic to the alliance with Great Britain, knows him for an Englishman. But I think I am the only other man who knows his identity, excepting yourself, of course. But you have not said how you knew. He was sent to me from Hamburg.

Richard Woodman was born in London. He became an indentured midshipman in cargo liners at the age of 16, which resulted in a 37 year nautical career. He became captain in 1980.

Captain Richard Martin Woodman LVO (born 1944) is an English novelist and naval historian who retired in 1997 from a 37-year nautical career, mainly working for Trinity House, to write full-time. His main work is 14 novels about the career of Nathaniel Drinkwater, and shorter series about James Dunbar and William Kite, but he also has written a range of factual books about 18th century and WW2 history

Super P
This is book 7 in the Drinkwater Series. I have previously read number 10, but the U.S. publisher has not been reprinting the books in the order they were written. To fully appreciate the book, you need to read the previous books in the series. Otherwise you will feel at points as if you have walked in on the middle of a story. In this particular episode, Drinkwater is off on a special mission to the Baltic, only to have his orders changed via a message sent through diplomatic channels in Sweden, and by the request of an agent picked up in Russia. Things are complicated by an unreliable lieutenant aboard the ship. Events lead to the diversion of a cargo of gold, and Drinkwater's participation in an intelligence gathering operation. One of Drinkwater's old enemies (from books 2 and 3) is reintroduced. Part of the plot seems a little contrived, but overall it is an interesting story.
Woodman's seventh novel involving the life and times of Captain Nathaniel Drinkwater, provides a change from the usual naval action that the prior Drinkwater books have dealt with. That, however, takes nothing away from the historical setting or the intrigue that awaits Drinkwater and his cohorts as they set about to discover Napolean's plans for an alliance with Russia. Woodman is a master at making history come alive.
Lieutenant Drinkwater's enemies have a field day in this well written, exciting and crafty novel. The background of this novel is very well researched re the historical settings, the problems of the mariners of the day etc.
And there are many credible twists and turns, mainly due to the incompetence3 of his seniors[other than Madoc Griffiths, his underrated captain, that we can readily be amazed that the British Navy beat the French in the Napoleonic War period. Thanks to Nelson and Napoleon's lack of naval knowledge, ability, delegations of authority and foresight, the Brits won! They were less stupid than he!
One wonders 'what if' Nelson had been alive druring the 'unwinnable ' war of 1776+.Wopuld he have got all those blockades and reliefs right?Would Congress have been forced to accept a compromise?
Undoubtedly,as 'rebel'Nelson wqouldn't have agreed with the war, like many commanders, and would have refused to serve against the American Colonies.
I have just finished this book, the seventh in the series, and enjoyed it thouroughly. More intrigue than sea battles, but an exciting climax to several story lines throughout the series. Any fan of O'Brien or Forester is encouraged to dive into Woodman.
Loved it
Another great Woodman adventure.
a good read
The characters were well developed. The plot well conceived. Good background. At some points a little hard to follow with language that wasn't always familiar.
