To le Bourdon's great apprehension, he saw the savages on thenorth shore making signal to this strange canoe, by means of smoke, and he foresaw the probability of his enemies obtaining the meansof crossing the stream, should the strangers proceed in the desireddirection. To counteract this design, he ran down to a spot on the beachwhere there was no rice-plant, and showing himself to the strangers, invited them to land on the south side, which was much the nearest, andin other visible respects quite as convenient as the opposite bankof the river. The book was an immediate sensation in the United States and is still considered a source book on the subject (no less than three books on the War of 1812 written in 2006 alone quoted from Roosevelt's response); however, Roosevelt's conclusions have been disputed by Professor Andrew Lambert in his 2012 book The Challenge: Britain Against America in th. Instead, Roosevelt referred to James's Naval History series, which holds only a shortened version.

The tall ship Friends Good Will and the War of 1812 on the Great Lakes come to vivid life in this well-researched historical volume by James Spurr. Both men stake their futures on a new venture: the fast sailing sloop Friends Good Will. I'm not very nautical, so many of the sailing terms in Sworn for Mackinaw went over my head, but that did not detract from the story. I did take the afternoon cruise on the Friends Good Will out of South Haven for my last birthday, so could better visualize the sailing action. Anyway, the book sheds light on an often overlooked era in Great Lakes history. I greatly enjoyed the story and characters. What an easy way to learn more about my State. I also appreciated Mr. Spurr's afterward telling how much of the story was fictional (surprisingly little). I look forward to reading the sequels.

Most people will not be able to get past the first paragraph of unintelligible jargon meant for a small niche of sailing enthusiasts. The book is populated with two kinds of women - they are either prostitutes or they are "up on a pedestal". Spurr's more noble characters ring flat but he does better with the nasty type and he does seem to understand that attorneys "earn a living at making fine distinctions" (page 247). This book has limited appeal and the average person will not find it an enjoyable read.

I am a sailor and a History Major. To have a Historical Novel draped around three of my favorite things (sailing, history and Michigan/Great Lakes geography) was very exciting. One review said that this was a niche book, written for only a few people. Maybe that is true ... but ... if you are a sailor, a history-buff or a Great Lakes aficionado, you will love this book. If, by chance, you are two or three of the above, you will really love this book. It is always amazing, to me, that war stories just keep coming. The human stories that unfold during a period of war are very rich and almost endless. I can not wait to start the next book in the series. We ordered it today.

James Spurr's book takes the reader right into the 1805-1812 time period with its accurate wording, interesting phrasing, and period descriptions. Mr Spurr shows his deep interest and knowledge of history, sailing, and the Great Lakes, weaving a story, mostly factual, that is riveting from cover to cover. He might have included more and better maps, but I can find no other criticism of this work. I enjoyed the book immensely and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in history, sailing, the Great Lakes, or just a good story.

I happen to crew on the replica Friends Good Will out of South Haven, Michigan. This book brings the history her crew knows so well to life in a new and vivid way. The characters are well developed, and the story exciting. There is no other person who knows as much about this ship and her history as Jim Spurr, and this novel demostrates that passion.

Set in Detroit and the Great Lakes just before the War of 1812, Spurr's story teems with life--transplanted Yankee merchants and seamen, British naval officers both dissolute and steady, smugglers, and a remarkable Indian woman. Bringing them all together is Friends Good Will, a graceful merchant sloop caught up in the war between Britain and the U.S. Sworn for Mackinaw is a great read, espcially for anyone interested in sailing and the history of early nineteenth century Michigan.
