Tony Parsons writes about contemporary emotional issues with great wit and insight. Starting Over is the story of George Bailey, a desk bound policeman who at the very beginning of the book suffers a near fatal heart attack. Following the lifesaving transplant, 42 year old George’s life begins to change irrevocably. Is it the heart of a 19-year-old, or is it the second chance the transplant has given him? But his new found youth has some unforeseen consequences for George.

Suddenly it is like driving on the surface of the moon. The BMW X5 bounces over God knows what and now she is glad to be driving this thing. She pulls up next to a pothole where a petrol pump once stood and she leans forward, the engine idling, staring at the boy in the middle of the road lit by her headlights. And she still doesn’t know.

All those people who had been in death’s departure lounge, and then had their journey cancelled just before boarding. God had thrown another log on my fire, wrote one man.

Tony Parsons on Starting Over. I hope that Starting Over is a light book about a heavy subject. Starting Over is the story a man who gets the chance to do what many of us dream of – to be young again, to go right back to the start and to have a second chance at getting his life right. George Bailey is 47 years old – a husband, a father, and a policeman. He is an old-fashioned guy who is about become young again. I think that many of us have an endless appetite for stories about the getting of wisdom, and in that category I would include everything from the movie Groundhog Day to the Buddhist classic Siddhartha.

Think of death that way. A lazy Sunday morning that goes on for all eternity, with you just dozing away until the end of days. That’s not such a bad way to think of death. What stops us thinking of death that way? I opened my eyes and I knew. My family were there at the stations of the hospital bed. It felt like a lot of time had gone by, and that they had not slept, or had any sleep worthy of the name, and that things had got worse. My wife, our boy, our girl. The great gawky Rufus, who had grown so extravagantly and yet still had so much growing.

Tony Parsons Starting Over. six. A few people stared at us as we walked into the Autumn Grove Care Home. Have you got my book?’ Lara’s grandmother said, as I helped her from her bed to her chair. When she said book she meant magazine, and by that she meant her favourite TV listings supplement. Right here, Nan,’ Lara said, and she placed it on her lap, already opened at today’s page, with her selected TV programmes circled in red, like fences around her loneliness. Lara sat on the bed and smiled.

Policeman George Bailey has been given the gift we all dream of – the chance to live his life again. After suffering a heart attack at the age of 47, George is given the heart of a 19-year-old – and suddenly everything changes…. Newly invigorated, George is suddenly a true friend to his teenage son and daughter - and no longer the stern, old school dad he was before, monitoring their every move. And suddenly he is an insatiable red-hot lover to his bewildered wife, and not just a complacent husband. And now George wants to change the world and not just watch it pass him by – and change it he most certainly will, as soon as he shakes off this hangover. George Bailey is about to discover that being young again is not all that it is cracked up to be – and what he actually wants more than anything in the universe is to have his old life back.

Tony Parsons is an excellent writer.
adventure time
Good reading, but as it has been written by a Brits, it is kind of sometimes odd. The story is describing an ordinary man going thru a heart transplant and feeling totaly changed after the operation. He describes how he feels, and how his family reacts to his change of attitude and behavior. Finally he is not too happy with these changes and would love to get back to his former way of life.
Good descriptions, interesting topic, but the writing is not alive enough for my taste and it might be a little bit boring after a while.

A male writer of chick flicks for men is how I have seen Tony Parsons described, I prefer to think of him as a male writer of Contemporary Fiction which can be enjoyed by both male and female readers. I happen to enjoy his take on relationships and have read five other novels of his, although this is only the second time I have reviewed one here.
If you have not already realised that 'life' is a precious gift, you will have by the time you have finished reading 'Starting Over'. This is an emotional read. Though not in my opinion his best work, it is probably worth reading if you are already a fan of his novels.

I have always loved Mr. Parsons' books, although this time I'm not sure... A heart-squeezing story though, where the heart, if you excuse the pun, is all that matters, physically and metaphorically. We follow the heart misadventures of George Bailey, who has suffered a massive heart attack and needs a replacement. The donor is a 19 year-old. After the surgery and survival, George's life changes completely. A very emotional path takes him and his family through an unexpected journey.
Mr. Parsons is able to convey emotions in a simple yet deep narrative. Bittersweet feelings alternate beautifully as it is customary with Mr. Parsons' writing and subsequently we ponder over the meaning of life and love. A good book, certainly, although this time it did not fulfill my expectations completely.

This is the fourth book by Tony Parsons that I have read. I love his style of telling a story and the humor that makes his books fun to read. I'm ready for another.

I loved this book, if you would like to escape down a long and winding path twisting and turning as conflicts between engaging characters unravel then this is a work for you. I was sad to see it end!
