Like most of her books, Mrs. Binchy tells this story in such a way that you soon feel drawn into a circle of friends, rather than characters in a book. You get to know them and you care about them - as they learn to care about each other. I have also read Scarlet Feather and Tara Road, and they are absolutely as delightful as Evening Class.

This is one of my favourite novels by Maeve Binchy. As with much of her work, the setting is Ireland. The main focus of the story is an Italian evening class, set up by a rather disillusioned school teacher, employing an Irish lady who has lived in Sicily for many years. Thirty students gather and become deeply involved in each other's lives. The book is written from several perspectives, starting with the school teacher, explaining why he is unhappy, and how the idea of the evening class arose
