To my daughter Monique – all the treasure this father needs. The prow-beast, hostile monster of the mast. With his strength hews out a file. On ocean’s even path, showing no mercy.

To my daughter Monique – all the treasure this father needs.

Robert Low The Prow Beast Austrgotaland, 975AD The sun stayed veiled behind lead clouds streaked with silver. The rain hissed and the sea heaved, black and sluggish as a walrus on a rock, while a wind dragged a fine smoke of spray into my eyes. Not storm enough,’ Hauk Fast-Sailor declared and he had the right of it, for sure. Have you a point to make, Jarl Orm of the Oathsworn, or are you just after showing your skill at tallying?’ Then he elbowed men aside to reach the prow, where Finn, gasping and exhausted, had been forced to step back, ropey strings drooling from his mouth. The Dragon Wings prow man was nowhere to be seen.

The Prow Beast (2010). The fourth book in the Oathsworn may be the final adventure for Orm and his band – but it's also their most gripping. Jarl Orm and his war-wise band have become feared and respected throughout the Viking world. No modern novelist knows more about the Vikings than Robert Low ~ Harry Sidebottom. With every new Oathsworn book, the series just gets better and better. The writing is great, the storytelling is stellar and the characters are even more engaging. I have enjoyed watching Orm grow up, seeing him try to settle down and live a farming life.

Low writes a well balanced book, full of action but deep in character development too. There is the usual melancholy as character after character meets his end as the story progresses; probably a necessary device to begin wrapping up the series but nonetheless hard on the reader. This is a melancholy chapter to the series.

That being said, Crowbone was a bit of a letdown.

Only 11 left in stock (more on the way). That being said, Crowbone was a bit of a letdown. Unlike the Lion Series, there is no actual historic arc being followed in the Oathsworn series.

The Oathsworn have become feared and respected throughout the Viking world. Their name goes before them and men cower in their presence, but they soon discover that fame comes at a price. While the Oathsworn revel in their newfound glory, Sterki, an old enemy with revenge in his heart, attacks their homestead—the Fjord Elk is sunk, old oar mates die, and the Oathsworn are forced to flee into the mountains. Unaccustomed to losing, the men retreat to lick their wounds. They have been entrusted with the care of Queen Sigrith, pregnant and soon to bear the heir to the crown of Sweden, and though the urge for revenge is strong, Orm's first duty is to protect the queen. He soon realizes that revenge is not the only thing on Sterki's mind; he has joined forces with Styrbjorn, nephew of King Eirik and next in line to the throne—if he can only get rid of the current heir. As the Oathsworn fight to defend themselves and their newfound celebrity and fortune, they're soon to realize that fame isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Its the Oathsworn, If you have read the other three then you know what you are about to get in the fourth installment. They may lose a few, they may sign a few up to take the new oath, but they can't be stopped. Good Viking drama, action. He keeps to his theme. For my part, I can understand how the Vikings, whether they be Norsemen, Danes, Swedes, etc are feeling the pressure that Christianity is intruding into their lives. Its unstoppable and they don't have an idea as to why its happening. But he doesn't harp on it. He brings it in as part of the book, doesn't make it the focus. Thats why I like the author, its little things, he drops in makes you feel you are in small part in that era reading the book. Plus while there is violence, how could there not be...hey its Vikings an all, but its not vulgar or crass. I've read another Viking series by another author, while he did a decent job with the story, he was just crass with the dealings of Christianity and their old Gods. Somehow I don't think people back then would be that way. People are the same now as they were back then. Just trying to make a living, Even if it was Viking style

This was a great fourth book in an excellent series! This is definitely one to start at the beginning with The Whale Road and work your way up to book 4. What's left of the Oathsworn are back under the continued leadership of Jarl Orm Rurickson, The Bear Slayer, Trader, and finder of treasure hoards. The hard oath of the brotherhood takes its toll on the life-expectancy of its members, and there's new crew, a new Fjord Elk, and naturally a new fool's errand, all haunted by people and circumstances of the past.

Every book in this series is a fast page-turner that keeps you involved and anxious to discover how events unfold. The Oathsworn new and old are full of colorful Viking-talk that historically accurate or not is certainly entertaining. Low does an excellent job of crafting unique landscapes that covers great distances through the medieval world. I was very impressed with his use of relatively unknown tribes and clans, in this case in the old Amber Road and Oder River region separating Germany and Poland in the 10th Century.

As has been the case in the previous books, Low weaves in a number of big historical characters who mingle almost seamlessly with his fictional ones. Olaf Tryggvasson, Queen Sigrith, and the Jomsviking Lord Pallig Tokeson, among others. If I had one grievance with the story it was probably Low's portrayal of the Jomsvikings in general, which was interesting but I was personally disappointed. His inclusion of Magyars certainly made up for it.

Unfortunately, aside from Finn suggesting there was good raiding to be had in England, there is no hint at a 5th installment and it looks unlikely after a visit to his website revealed this: "It (The Prow Beast) will be followed by the "Kingdom of Scotland" series, set in the time of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace, which I am writing now." Its just as well; not sure Orm and his crew had much more left in them. Given the abominable history portrayed in the film "Braveheart", which seems to have infected universal unconsciousness, just shy of reading the actual history I have faith Mr. Low may set the record a lot straighter. I look forward to it.

I highly recommend this entire series. Enjoy!!

If you enjoy historical fiction, if you love Bernard Cornwell's work then you will absolutely want to delve into Lows books.

Few authors write such visceral tales. It is harder to create a series that holds the reader through every part. Cornwell has done it multiple times and so has Low.

The story has progressed with a lot more read than the previous. Now we have a fast moving tale to be told. The first two were very hard to read because of the names and interweaving of names and places of not much baring on the story. Struggle though these are definitely worth reading.
Mikale
It is a tale about a band of viking raiders told by their leader.

I love historical fiction, especially about the Viking Age soit is right up my alley.
Malhala
Pretty good yarn, could stand alone but reading others in the series does help with background. The writer also strives for literary images and does a pretty good job at times!
Vikus
ok but not much of a Viking
love this series but this book lacked the action of the others. with only one book left I didn't think any more character development was needed. look forward to the last one
