William Rawlings, Jr. is a sixth-generation resident of Washington County, Georgia.

William Rawlings, Jr. He received his education at Emory, Tulane and Johns Hopkins universities. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Sandersville. I read The Lazard Legacy over two afternoons, after I applied varnish to some old heart-of-pine stair treads in my home during the mornigs, sitting under a ceiling fan on a screen porch, occasionally watching the billowing cumulous clouds become like characters in the novel I was reading (I really did make out the outline of a stethoscope in one of. them). A dash of Peach Schnapps in my iced tea made it the consummate book-reading summer afternoon in the South!

In small, rural communities, people who grow up there can be divided into three groups. I know, I've published original research on their migration histories!

One is the group who stays long-term and "becomes" the successive community for later generations. A second is the group who leaves for greener pastures, learning, loving and finding life elsewhere. The third is the group who leaves initially but returns home after education, some career success, traumatic life events, or an economic opportunity there presents itself. Often, once they return "home," as Thomas Wolfe once opined, it largely ain't there no more. Or, put another way, the return migrant wonders: who the hell ARE these people?

The Lazard Legacy is focused on a member of the third group, Dr. Ben Pike. He's an internal medicine physician returning home to rural Middle Georgia Walkerville after the bright lights of Nashville dim in his heart with love gone even further South and the outright gift of an existing medical practice back home. What he finds through his incessant exploring of what he thought he knew is a gripping tale of family pain, new romance, Bubba the Sheriff, and the sad, sad tale of what happens in far too many small, rural towns around the United States. The author's ability to time when and how to insert the key back-story narrative is very keen, just when that literary draw of the cards keeps the reader's desire to know more and more instead of the work becoming slightly stale. Nary a slice of day old bread in this writing. He let this initial manuscript of his, according to the Preface to the Second Edition, lay fallow in a desk drawer for a decade before publishing it. No wine before it's time, I guess, for this vintage was indeed most agreeable.

Now, I actually grew up in "Walkerville," have a pretty good idea of who a few of the characters were based upon, and even dined numerous times in Dr. Pike's favorite upscale steakhouse in the posh Buckhead section of Atlanta (Bones, whose General Manager handled many entertaining events for me when I lived there). But I did not see the twists and turns in the plot that Dr. Rawlings' first novel carried me through. I read The Lazard Legacy over two afternoons, after I applied varnish to some old heart-of-pine stair treads in my home during the mornigs, sitting under a ceiling fan on a screen porch, occasionally watching the billowing cumulous clouds become like characters in the novel I was reading (I really did make out the outline of a stethoscope in one of them). A dash of Peach Schnapps in my iced tea made it the consummate book-reading summer afternoon in the South! I think it will for you too.

I ran across Dr. Rawlings' Killing at Ring Jaw Bluff and the Second Coming of the Invisible Empire on Amazon a few months ago and was consumed by each of them (see other reviews). I wanted to try my hand at his fiction. The Lazard Legacy was his first book so that was a logical place to start. I'll have to admit: I am becoming a fan-boy of his fiction work too. It's a great beach read, a wonderful patio book, and an insightful venue to learn about small Southern towns if you're not already familiar. And even, like me, if you think you already are.

Now, on The Rutherford Cypher, Crossword, and The Tate Revenge that Amazon delivered last week! I'd better pick up some more DeKuyper Peachtree schnapps...

As a native of Sandersville, Georgia, the town on which the fictional town is loosely based, I did enjoy the Georgia references. My complaint with this book is that the characters are so one dimensional that you can't really get a feel for them. Troup Lazard is irredeemably evil (but you never know why) and Ben Pike is mediocre. Alex, the love interest, seems far more interested in solving the various mysteries than she does in romancing Ben Pike. I did enjoy the book and would read another by Dr. Rawlings, but I would certainly suggest fleshing out the characters a bit more in the next one.

the author has a great knowledge of the area and subjects he writes about and his "twists" make you not want to put the book down. I have enjoyed all three books of his that I have read.

William Rawlings is a masterful storyteller in this spellbinding novel. Terror, intrigue, and suspense intertwine to engulf the reader's interest. The ultimate evil that lurks deeply within every resentful sibling-rivalry relationship is clearly epitomized within these pages. The book is a rich mixture of history and fiction, and Rawlings demonstrates his literary flair for the use of local color. As the reader plunges into the turmoil of the timeless theme of Good vs. Evil, one question will remain until the end: Who will win--the "protagonist" or the sociopath/antagonist? This is a must-have read for those who enjoy the captivation of psychological thrillers!

I checked this book out at the library first, butI am definately purchasing one of my own. I work in Sandersville and have access to get the author to sign a copy for me personally. I love books about the south and mysteries, this one is great. You do know who the villain is but you can hardly put the book down waiting to find out exactly what he did and why. It really makes you wonder what people will do for love and money. Great plot and interesting characters, a really great read. Look for his second novel Fall 2004.

Full of suspense and intrigue with revelations of rural Southern nuances that can only be captured by a native. Amazing fast-paced plot detail. The crafty disclosures of the inner-torture and frailties of the characters reminds me of Tennessee Williams. This book is a real "page turner" that I could not put down. Not so much of a "who-done-it", but one of "how and why". Anyone who enjoys suspense or an unveiling of the "good old boy" Southern culture will be enthralled with this one from the first page!

I took this book to the beach and found that I couldn't put it down. The historical and Georgia references were so interesting. Although it was obvious early on who the villan was, one was kept in suspense about the details. I found it sheer entertainemt and a fun read.
I thought this was a great book. Very well written. Can tell Mr. Rawlings loves history. Would recommend to anyone. Have read The Tate Revenge which was even better that this one and am currently reading the Rutherford Cipher
