This is the first volume of the author's series following the history of the English Civil War through beautiful and passionate romances. In this book, we see the beginning of the actual war with the events leading up to it. The characters in the focus are the Maxwell family, Richard and Dorothy, a wonderful, loving, warm couple and their adolescent and young adult children - and their story as defined by the tumultuous political events and their romantic relationships. Richard Maxwell is a member of the Parliament trying to redress the grievances from the absolutist rule of the King, but he is less keen to allow religious fanaticism to shape politics and to lead to extremes - which happens in spite of his efforts. The heroine is his eldest daughter Kate, a late blooming beauty but intelligent and a strong character. The hero is a very unusual man: an Italian moneylender and goldsmith, Luciano, needed and despised by the English aristocrats, but motivated by his own personal quest of finding out the truth of his father's fate who had been executed for treason. They have an instant attraction and strong affinity to each other, but a controversial relationship: Luciano is considered socially unsuitable to Kate and he thinks he can’t settle down in marriage before fulfilling his avenging quest. As the novel follows the political events and the early stages of the Civil War, we see the development of the romance between Kate and Luciano, the ill-fated and slowly disintegrating marriage between Eden Maxwell, an officer int he Parliamentary army and the fundamentally selfish Cynthia, a daughter of a royalist family; the story of the other Maxwell siblings, and Luciano’s sister Gianetta
I enjoyed the complex and interwoven plot arcs of these relationships and Luciano’s investigations, his change from detached cynicism to embrace the friendship of the Maxwells and the love of a good woman; the history aspect that tells the events of politics and war in a vividly drawn picture and especially the strong and loyal relationship between Kate and Luciano. The beautiful jewels described were an added bonus. I heartily recommend this story to fans of historical romance!
Luciano del Santi has got to be among my favorite Hero types - mostly, because he's not a true hero in any sense of the word except perhaps for those few people he loves with a blazing passion unto death, will risk anything for and a determination to see matters through to their rightful end, even when it comes to a "reckoning" of sorts which some would name "revenge." Coming from a family of "nasty" moneylenders, his father is tragically set up as a traitor and executed leaving the 12 year old Luciano with the task of getting his mother and sister to his Uncle in Genoa, Italy. His mother dies along the way, but Luciano and Gianetta manage to finally arrive at his uncle's home where Luciano has only one request of his uncle - Vittorio Falcieri. He wants to learn the goldsmith trade.

Kate Maxwell is blessed to come from a marvelous, well rounded family who accept her for the young women she is, which is not a simpering miss. In fact, she's a late developer in body, but not in soul or intellect. Her father, Richard, is an honorable man who does everything he can to assist his country in his role as a member of Parliament, during one of England's most turbulent times. Even as the government begins to be torn asunder by King Charles' and Cromwell's divided interests, Luciano del Santi has come into his own as a gifted goldsmith and powerful money lender, known as the "Italian."

I found this story to be vital and interesting even though much of it has a truly historical flavor - political machinations, military matters including battles and the individuals who were in charge of all the foregoing. So, no - this isn't a book that will please those readers who are looking for a fun and/or simpler historical romance novel. However, the eventual love story between Kate and Luciano is everything one could hope for with all the flavors I enjoy, including - loyalty, passion, respect, lovely dialogue between the lovers - when they're finally expressing their tender feelings.

There are so many interesting side stories going on in the book I won't mention them - some have their own stories already written and others are waiting to be written. I'm very appreciative to those reviewers who've led me to this series of books.
Having read The Player by this author recently and absolutely loving it, I decided to give this series a try. I was warned that there would be a lot more history than romance so I was prepared. I liked the basic story but I found the book to be very long and tedious in parts. The author is to be commended for her very obvious attention to detail and research into the period she writes about but it tended to feel like a non fiction history book rather than fiction for big chunks of the book. It's a complex story and difficult to summarise but the main premise is that of the H being an Italian moneylender (gorgeous of course) hellbent on solving the mystery behind his fathers execution as a traitor when he was a child. Along the way he meets the very engaging h but they both avoid the attraction they feel for each other largely because it's an unsuitable match. Sparks fly on the few occasions they meet over the years (yes it takes years). There are loads of very engaging secondary characters and I so wish Ms Riley had spent more time telling their stories. Anyway there is no doubt that the author's writing is excellent and I've already downloaded the second in the series.
This is one of those books, for me, that doesn't allow for mowing lawns, doing wash, or making supper ! I had a hard time ever putting this book down. Great characters, history telling, & romance all in one! I love every book Stella Riley writes. So much of everything I enjoy in a book- I will read these over & over! Thank you,Stella, & keep them coming , please!!????
