The present: the secret to enjoying your work and life, now! is an engaging story about a young man's journey through life and how he learns ways to solve life's problems through the simple wisdom taught by an old man.when he was a boy, the young man comes across a wise old man who talks to him about something called the present. The old man tells the boy that the present is the greatest gift that anyone can receive. The puzzled boy asks the old man what it is, but receives no direct answer.in his teens, the boy sees the old man again. This time, when the boy asks him about the present, the old man says that he already knows what it is and asks the boy to recollect how involved he was when he was cutting the grass. Still unable to understand, the boy gives it up.the boy is now a young man who has a good job, but he soon runs into a crisis when he is passed over for promotion. He goes to see the old man who advises him to live for a while in isolation, in the mountains. I did enjoy reading the book and it was a good introduction into the idea of thinking in the present moment. My only issue was that it was a bit too simple. There was no real practical information or excercises to really do in order to help me process the information I was learning. As mentioned it did get me started with the process of focusing on the present, and it helped me to understand what I was really doing that was causing stress and anxiety in my life. I would recommend it to someone just as long as they don't spend a lot of money on it.

Great inspirational piece. It was recommended to me by my hair stylist who so happens to be a life coach of some sort and I suppose by talking she realized I was in a phase of my life where this book could help. This book has truly helped me, my approach to life and circumstances has changed because of this book. From time to time when I feel like I need a reminder I read this book again. I have been recommending this book to anyone who I feel needs the same positive advice that received.

"The Present" is a story that illustrates how living in the present allows us to fully enjoy our work and life...now. It's Eastern religion philosophy made more palatable for the American masses, who, as a whole, do not know how to live in the present.

I noticed one thing after reading this book: When I meditate, which I do by focusing my attention on the breath, all the thoughts that intrude can be labeled as either "past" or "future." I have a hard time focusing on what's happening, right now, without my mind automatically ruminating on the past, which only creates shame and guilt, or worrying about the future, which produces anxiety.

"The Present" simply explains that the past should only be learned from so that we can do things differently today, and the future should be nothing to fret about. We should make our plans for the future, then focus on what is important to do today to achieve that goal. This all sounds like common sense, but it's something most people have a really hard time putting into practice. I'm currently in a situation where I continually find myself saying, "I can't wait" for this, or "I can't wait" for that. "I can't wait" for anything is an absurd statement. I can wait; I have don't have a choice. There's 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour, and 60 seconds in a minute. There's nothing I can do to speed time up or slow it down. So instead, I'll focus on making each one of those seconds, minutes, hours, and days count. And "The Present" has driven that point home.

The book was recommended by my Physician. Really easy read that was thoughful and insightful on life. It really boiled down the essence of what life is about and how we as individuals should navigate through it. We as humans over complicate stuff that creates anxiety and burns up so much mental/emotional energy over "non-sense". This book shows you how to avoid that dynamic. Great read!!

I did like the book. You can read it in an hour if you stay focused in The Present. (sorry, I couldn't resist)
The purpose of the book is to let the world know that focusing on the present moment, learning from the past and preparing for the future will improve your life tremendously. That is awesome message everyone should listen to! There is just one problem. The story which is set up to convey this message is overly simple and honestly boring. Having said that, this book can work for people. It is simple and a bit dull, but the most important thing about this book is not the story but the message.
The Present reminded me of that other book, FISH, that was popular a few years ago. It has the same boring, simple story but a powerful message.
I think this book can be useful to many people. Just don't buy it thinking you are going to read a great story.

People who are trying to find their way in life regularly ask me what books I recommend to help them. Beyond recommending the Bible I always recommend The Present. This is a book which I have read numerous times highlighting and rereading sections all the time. Whenever I feel I have lost my way I go to the Bible and this book. I have even been known to purchase and send this book to individuals who I feel really need it.
