Cahan was an emigrant from Lithuania in 1882, having moved to New York City to escape political persecution under the Russian czar.

"No American fiction of the year merits recognition more than this Russian's stories of Yiddish life. … [Mr. Cahan] is a humorist, and his humor does not spare the sordid and uncouth aspects of the character whose pathos he so tenderly reveals." — William Dean HowellsYekl (1896), the novel upon which the highly successful film Hester Street was based, was written by Abraham Cahan, editor of the prestigious Jewish Daily Forward for half a century. It is probably the first novel in English that had a New York East Side immigrant as its hero; reviewing it, Howells hailed Cahan as "a new star of realism." The Imported Bridegroom and Other Stories came two years later. The Jews that Sholem Aleichem described in their little old-world shtetl had emigrated; other tale-tellers were needed to describe the Jewish experience in the tenements and garment factories of New York. Cahan was one of the first to write about them in English. His book gives a better picture than most works of non-fiction of what immigrant life was like at the turn of the century. Cahan clearly delineates the clash of cultures and shows the innumerable problems, crises and dilemmas of acculturations. In Yekl, the central problem derives from a social condition: the urgent desire of the hero to become a real American, to be less a "greenhorn"; but the play of events is around an emotional crisis; Yekl no longer loves the wife he left behind, who has now rejoined him in the new land, and who seems to him shockingly European. In The Imported Bridegroom, the issue is apparently religious, a clash between traditional faith and secularism; but we are left wondering whether philosophy has not become commingled with sociology. Other stories deal with sweatshop life, romance in the slums, a wedding in the ghetto.

Yiddish Forwards long time editor and social radical Abraham Cahan is probably at his time and all time the greatest authority on Yiddish speaking Immigrants to the US and especially New York and the famed Lower East Side. You will laugh and laugh and sigh, sigh with Nachas! All about mariage, work and divorce of Eastern European immigrants, many forced to leave the Old Country persecutions and poverty for the Goldena Medina - America. Yekl, for example, leaves his Kosher and very Religious Jewish wife and baby behind and settle with a job in a garment sweatshop - like most all of them at the time.. Will he bring his wife and baby boy over? Will Yekl ,who
shaves his beard and dresses nattily and gves most of his Yiddishkeit up continue to love his wife? This is about those who wanted so much - to become "Yenkees"- Americans,- not greeners, anymore. The real deal. The wonderful film Hester Street is based on this tale. Enjoy!

Came as expected. Great condition.

I got this book because I could not find it in the library. The movie Hester Street was based on it. Abraham Cahan deserves to better known as a writer of fiction. His journalism is important, but he is an excellent chronicler of the Jewish immigrant experience.

Although used, came in excellent condition. What I expected.

I was looking forward to reading about the Lower East Side of NYC and the Jewish immigrant experience. The book does that but it is pretty tedious reading and at some points too boring for words. There are much better books out there dealing with this topic...

I had read Abraham Cahan's "the rise of David Levinsky" and loved it. Cahan wrote relatively few novels. So when I discovered this novel by Cahan I bought it. If you want to be extraordinarily impressed by his work buy Levinsky, Not this novel.

As it described, theres a little damage on the cover and some highlights in the book but it's totally fine. This book is awesome for the cheap price!!
Great retellings of Jewish stories based in New York! I had to read it for school, but it was worth it!
