It is Bicentenary year and Australia is having the party of its lifetime.

When local solicitor Will Rockne is found in his car by his wife-shot through the head-it seems a baffling and motiveless murder. However, Scobie Malone, newly assigned to the case, has his suspicions. It is Bicentenary year and Australia is having the party of its lifetime. I have liked Jon Cleary since I read The Sundowners in the 1960s. I started reading the Scobie Malone mystery books and liked a few of them also (I have not read all of them yet). Anyway, I like fiction concerning WWII (Alistair Maclean among others) and decided to purchase the cheapest used pb I could find of this book (which is not available in Kindle) so that if I didn't like it I wouldn't feel guilty about donating it.

This book kept me interested from the beginning to the end. A little bit of everything, intrigue of course, humor and some romance (not enough of the latter two to detract from the story line). The group of protagonists, including natives, had issues with each other and individually each had faults, which is life. The relationship between the "hero" Con and the native man he worked with (Buka) had more than just a boss/employee relationship, they were friends who trusted each other. Con did not seem to have the bigotry so prevalent in Europeans/Americans towards the natives in the East Indies; although bigotry was present in the book; not only between Europeans/Americans and natives but between native tribes, between Japanese and everyone else.

This is an excellent book about civilian spying on the Japanese on New Britain Island (east of Papua New Guinea) leading up to the conflict at Guadalcanal. Very well written and interesting.

I like Jon Cleary's books that preceded the Scoby Malone books. He wrote adventurous books and I miss those, so when I found this on Amazon I had to buy it.
