Only 15 left in stock (more on the way). In February 2015, the book discussion group at The LGBT Center in NYC discussed "Flesh and Blood," 20 years after the novel was released. The novel covers 60 years (plus a coda in the future) and tells the story of the six major characters: - Constantine is the quick-to-anger Greek immigrant father who will do anything (anything!) to get ahead. He's the dark side of the American dream.

Flesh and Blood is the real thing-a novel about an American family surviving an American half-century that manages to be terrifically engaging and delicately written and heartfelt at the same time. Bruce Barcott, Seattle Weekly. In precise and beautiful prose, he explores the desire for connection and the knowledge that most of the time we remain adrift. Reading Michael Cunningham is like putting on see-through glasses. Printed in the United States of America.

In Flesh and Blood, Michael Cunningham takes us on a masterful journey through four generations of the Stassos family as he examines the dynamics of a family struggling to "come of age" in the 20th century. It's a novel that won't essentially do Michael Cunningham's reputation as a novelist any harm or any good. The book I kept thinking about as I read it is The Corrections, by Jonathan Franzen, although I finished Flesh and Blood feeling much better than I did after The Corrections. Flesh and Blood didn't leave me feeling down at all. I just wanted it to last a little longer. A novel of connecting and reconnecting, inspired by the writings of the great visionary poet Walt Whitman, Specimen Days is a genre-bending, haunting ode to life itself – a work of surpassing power and beauty by one of the most original and daring writers at work today.
The epic tale of an American family, Flesh and Blood follows three generations of the Stassos clan as it is transformed by ambition, love, and history. Constantine Stassos, a Greek immigrant, marries Mary Cuccio, an Italian-American girl, and they have three children, each fated to a complex life. Susan is oppressed by her beauty and her father's affections; Billy is brilliant, and gay; Zoe is a wild, heedless visionary. As the years pass, their lives unfold in ways that compel them-and their parents-to meet ever greater challenges.

Flesh and Blood - Michael Cunningham. I really enjoy Michael Cunningham's writing, quite poetic and flowing and I could not put this book down. However I am not sure I liked any of the characters, even at the end. Also, almost every male character in the novel had conflicted feelings about his sexuality, which in my limited experience did not seem realistic.
