The Classic Slave Narratives book. The History of Mary Prince. What i learned in this novel was about the life of Frederick DOuglass, how he was a runaway slave and became a successful writer.

The Classic Slave Narratives book. Mary Prince's narrative is a very detailed recollection. She makes the reader feel as if they are in her shoes. She describes her treatment as a slave in the West Indies. It seems that as she was sold to new masters her treatment became worse. I realized how Douglass was very influential for slavery because he was a very intelligent man who wanted freedom.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. A friend had given me a copy of "The Bondwoman's Narrative" (great read) written by a slave that passed for white and escaped to the north.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Given the time period, this was to be expected. It was so surprising and full of things they never teach about when you cover the topic of American slavery in school. even some native americans could (and did) keep slaves.

This book told first-hand stories of slave life here in the U.S., England and the Carribean. I have read other books that described the daily life of a slave, but hearing it from an actual slave hits home harder. It is good to revisit our history so we do not repeat it.
Rude
It is a nice compendium of the major primary sources (slave narratives) that are available. My major complaint is not content but that the binding is so crappy. It is tight and likely would break if you actually tried to hold the pages open.

Very moving and just kind of "tell it like it is". The writing style is very easy to read and understand. I had to purchase this for a college class, and found that I didn't have an easy time putting it down.

Not for the very depressed or light of heart. Also, it's interesting to do some background research on the slaves in the narratives and see what happened to them and what happened to their owners.
Wel
I'm so glad to have purchased this book!! I was a teenager during the Civil Rights Movement and there were little to no indepth stories or articles about the lives/experiences of my ancestors during the slave years. Oh sure, we heard or read about such notables as Harriet Tubman, the 'Moses' of the Underground Railroad, Frederick Douglas, andd George Washington Carver, and others, but this narrative gives the reader an insight into the lives of some of the obscure individuals, not mentioned in history books.

This book or others similar should be read in addition to the history books about the founding of the United States.

Great literary work. The narratives have some passages where violence against slaves was inferred in their language. Given the time period, this was to be expected.

A good collection of slave narratives, a must read for anyone wanting to learn about Atlantic slavery. From the inspirational lives of Equiano and Douglas, to the heartbreaking story of Mary Prince, this shows a variety of situations.

saving for my grandkids
I love reading books like this. The text is small though. It's like several books in one.
