I have read many of his books and find most of them to be a little better than okay, but not great. This one falls somewhere between good and great-closer to great.

Every parent's nightmare becomes reality for Kara Marshall when her daughter, Lindsay, vanishes from her bedroom during the night. It was more psychological than his typical scary ghost type of story. The police suspect that the girl is just another moody teenage runaway, angry over leaving behind her school and friends because her family is moving. It kind of left me with a sick sort of feeling, kind of like after I watched the movie "Seven" or "Saw".

Perfect Nightmare was my first John Saul book and it was fast, intense and extremely dark as simple words rang truth in. .Narrators Dick Hill and Susie Breck were fantastic. Worth the listen just to hear all there different voices. Great performance by this husband and wife.

Perfect Nightmare was my first John Saul book and it was fast, intense and extremely dark as simple words rang truth in my ears like bells and they were terrifying and depressing but made for a really good horror book. There were no super natural monsters, no vampires and witches but a soul of a man so dark and rotten that it chilled me to the bone as I read this book in two days, as it was a very fast and smooth read.

John Saul has been around for a long time. His first book (Suffer the Children) was published in 1977 and became an instant best seller. I have read many of his books and find most of them to be a little better than okay, but not great.

This one falls somewhere between good and great—closer to great. And, that’s good.

Lindsey Marshall, a senior in high school, is devastated when her parents announce they are selling the home she grew up, part of a small bedroom community, and are moving the family to the big city. She becomes angry and sullen and sarcastic. So, when she disappears shortly after the open house event, the police assume she’s a run-away. Her mother Kara disagrees. And when other women begin to disappear, it becomes clear that someone truly is stalking the tiny community. Kara begins a hunt for her daughter that will change her life in more ways than she could ever dream of…

Some books—like this one—are hard to review without giving away too much of the plot. So, I’m going to have to tread lightly…

• First, I want to mention the character development. It’s amazing. Saul really put some time into growing his characters so that we, the readers, truly feel that we know them. We understand their motivations and decisions. We know, almost before they do, how they’re going to react to any given situation. Yet, because these characters are “human”, they can and do surprise us here and there.

• Saul, too, throws in a few surprises. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, a major character’s story line veers in a direction I never thought it would and blows me away. I LITERALLY cried out, “NO!” Plot twists are always fun!

• When the kidnapper is finally unmasked, I must admit, I was surprised. Saul managed to confuse and redirect me with some subtle and some not-so-subtle red herrings. I’m USUALLY not that easily deterred. Good for him! And, good for me. I enjoyed the not-knowing.

Some of John Saul’s books involve the supernatural—ghosts, demons, monsters. As a result, he is often considered to be a horror or paranormal writer. And, in those cases, I suppose that’s true. However, in my mind, John Saul is more of a SUSPENSE writer. He is masterful when writing tension filled dramatic scenes. So much so, when I am engaged in one of these I can almost hear the histrionic crescendo of background music, building and building in my mind….

A PERFECT NIGHTMARE: A NOVEL is a fast read, yet it’s detailed and mysterious and suspenseful and fun. It’s not a perfect story. I felt the ending was a little rushed. I thought it could have been delved into a little bit more… And, there were a few times when grammar errors pulled me out of the story and made me go hmmm. I didn’t like that. However, over-all. It was a good book…almost great.

It took a little while for me to get into this book but once I did, I couldn't stop reading! It was very suspenseful. I don't want to even imagine what it would be like to have a child go missing but I think John Saul did an excellent job of portraying a mother who does not give up home regardless of what everyone is telling her.

I am hesitant to leave a 5 star review because it seems like most of them are written by "friends" of the author and are complete nonsense. So I was torn between 4 and 5 stars but figured what the heck, this indeed was an excellent thriller. This is my 3rd John Saul novel and so far the best. Once the story took off I could hardly stop reading. The story was horrifyingly realistic with a couple of parts that nearly stopped my heart. The police involvement was not overly detailed which I liked. The writing was smooth and I was able to feel as though I were there with the characters. If you loved Dean Koontz's "Intensity" or James Patterson "Kiss the Girls" this would be an enjoyable read for you. Yes, the subject matter was disturbing but it was written within the boundaries of decency. Kudos to John Saul and I will be ordering more of his novels.

John Saul has done it again ! Perfect Nightmare, was a novel I couldn't put down. I'd start reading it & before I knew, I'd be reading it for hours & not even realize it. I'd feel my heart start pounding, getting goosebumps. Incredible Novel !

This was the first book I ever read by John Saul and it was about 5 years ago that I did and I wanted to get it to read it again, cause I liked it that much! The pages have no markings which I love, and the cover shows thats its a little run down but thats okay

What a wonderful story with so many twists and turns! You know a book is wonderful when you are sad when you finish that last page!

John Saul never disappoints. Like all of his books, it's difficult to put down.
